Hi
I'm about to consider trying out ableton live. Since I don't have
windows (or macOS) installed, I'm thinking about installing the windows
(vista) I got with my laptop in vmware. But first I'd like to ask a few
questions here:
1) Doesn't anyone here have first hand experience with running ableton
live through vmware?
2) Does it run fast/slow?
3) Can it be used with jack?
4) How about jack transport (for syncing other apps)?
5) Something not working?
6) Something to avoid?
7) Anything special I should do?
Other non-first-hand experiences are also welcome.
NB: I'm hoping we could avoid a) it's-closed-source-and-therefore-sucks
and b) it's-a-crappy-app-in-the-first-place :-)

Llewellyn Beasley, thought the first half or so was pretty cool. Reminded me a lot of vintage Kansas or perhaps even vintage Styx. Quite impressed!! Has a lot of potential.

My mic recording level in Ubuntu+Gnome is frustratingly low. I have
(I think) wound up all the levels to maximum in the mixer, but I still
get only -20dB even with shouting into the mic. It's the same for all
hardware (2 internal and 2 USB soundcards, different mics), 2
different computers, 2 different versions of Ubuntu (Heron on my
desktop and Ibex on my laptop) and whatever recording software I use
(arecord, audacity, kwave, ecasound). Also the same with Jack and if
I kill pulseaudio.
This started a few months ago (originally, when everything was first
installed, it was fine) so I'm pretty confident it's an ALSA-related
software issue.
Seems like ALSA (or something) is being told to attenuate the signal
somewhere. Any clues where to look?

Dear all,
on behalf of the QARecord development team, I'm pleased to announce
the release of QARecord 0.5.0.
QARecord is a simple but solid recording tool. It works well with stereo
and multichannel recordings, supporting ALSA and JACK interfaces and in
both 16 bit and 32 bit mode. By using a large ringbuffer for the
captured data, buffer overruns are avoided. It has a Qt based GUI with
graphical peak meters. It is available under the GNU General Public
License.
Special thanks go to Frank Kober and David Henningsson for their effort.
Changes

The latest Lawler Rules record is out, and I played Fluidsynth piano and a real, well-mic'ed, well-maintained B3 Hammond on it:
http://www.myspace.com/lawlerrulesvol1
My main regret is that I didn't have time to get LinuxSampler and that great Steinway soundfont working before the session. I actually only had time to get it working the day *after* the session, arrgh.
I'm playing just piano (Fluidsynth) and the real B3. Oh, and I sing the hook on "Always" and the chorus on "Tracks".
All the other, very cool synthy sounds and sound design was done by the producer, probably using Reason or some such.

This is something that was passed on to me today, and it is extremely
interesting. There are 5 parts to it, and I was so impressed I watched
all five straight off!
It gets a bit heavy going in places, but it is well worth watching. In
fact I've bookmarked it as I'm sure I'll want to look at it again.

Hey,
I've not posted around here much but I've finished up a song and would like
opinions if anyone's interested in giving them.
The guitars are played by me and recorded in Ardour, the vocals are mine but
I sampled them and triggered them using Specimen and my keyboard, I played
all the synths which are mostly VSTs but there is some ZynAddSubFX in there
too. All the midi was recorded into Rosegarden and the drums are Addictive
Drums again triggered by my keyboard. Very interested in hearing comments
and such.

Hi list,
try to build jack from svn.
First command (sh ./autogen.sh) gives this return :
libtoolize: Consider adding `-I m4' to ACLOCAL_AMFLAGS in Makefile.am.
Open Makefile.am but can't see ACLOCAL_AMFLAGS
Anyone have an idea ?
Thanks,
Fred
I've been attempting to help a friend by trying to repair his CME UF-8 controller. It had a few stuck keys.
I've repaired my own Novation and M-Audio controllers before. It's almost always the contact strips-- those little bubbles of rubber with carbonized contacts that the keys press down on.
Well, these need replacing. But they're totally different than the "standard" kind used on M-Audio and Novation gear. They are weird-looking:

and
http://restivo.org/misc/contactstrip5.jpg
I need 8 of these things (there are 12 contacts per strip). CME is utterly useless. They have no phone number on their website! They don't answer emails. They have a USA distributor, who I've called and called and called, but alas their own official distributor can't get a return email from CME.
I'm getting worried now. This thing has been sitting disassembled and useless for weeks now. Where could I find these parts? Are they used on any other gear? Are there any other sources for it?
