However, on a quick thought now, perhaps because private individuals do not kick in enough and commercial interests (perhaps non-standard music ones) will while still not getting in the way of what you are trying to do. Say the corner grocer wants to be a patron at a lever which will get his store mentioned on the album? Ardour 2.8.9 released

Just a couple of days since 2.8.8, and Ardour 2.8.9 is available from http://ardour.org/download Why? It turned out that the infamous mute bug (which caused the mute button to do nothing) was actually not fixed in 2.8.8 (or prior versions where this has been claimed). This has been one of the worst regressions of recent versions of Ardour, and I mistakenly blamed packagers and distributions for it. Thankfully ardour.org member the_CLA spent time with me on IRC and we finally proved to my satisfaction that the bug was really in Ardour. Its now fixed, hopefully forever. In addition, a new Ardour user on OS X pointed out two rather unfortunate problems that have now been fixed: * If a plugin has existing presets, the preset selector in the plugin editor window would steal key events, possibly causing an unintentional (and unrecoverable) reset of the plugin state (very annoying) * All canvas items except for the text used to label and regions could have their color adjusted. These two exceptions have now been added to the set of things that can be tweaked by, for example, a color-blind user, or someone who just wants dark colors for tracks and white text on region names. Many thanks to the_CLA and Maurits Lamers for patiently getting me to understand these 3 bugs.

a NEW question about pitch and speed

This morning when I turned on my computer it started playing stuff on Pandora, but more slowly and at a lower pitch than normal. I wondered if this was just a problem with Pandora, so I checked my own song files with Amarok. Again, that music plays more slowly and at a lower pitch than I'd expect. 1-2 days ago this very same computer played at the right pitch and speed. What could have gone wrong? The built-in (only) sound card's clock is now running more slowly? Some system wide configuration changed for the sound system, and it now slows things down? If it's a configuration thing, then I didn't intend to do that, nor did I even touch the configuration. This computer runs PulseAudio on Mandriva 2009.1. The driver is snd_intel8x0. Any ideas folks? Campaign: "The most remarkable album on this entire planet"

Hi everyone, perhaps you know me as "paniq". For 10 years, I'm releasing good and free music on the web. My wife and I, we are currently organizing an album project called "The most remarkable album on this entire planet". Most likely remarkable because it will sound awesome, maybe also because the album is entirely funded by fans, but most importantly, because the album will be completely made with free software, in this particular case: Ubuntu Linux and the Linux Audio infrastructure. We hope the album will always be remembered for showing that selling copies isn't the only way to produce great work, and that the power of free software can indeed outsmart commercial software. Furthermore, our aim is to contribute to the treasure of free works, because we believe that financial interests interfere with quality, truth and honesty in art, and we wish to set an example. Since our launch last week, we have raised 50% of the basic production cost from our closest friends and fans, but we are not quite there yet. To make donating more attractive, we have thrown in some rewards such as early downloads, a final CD, access to video logs and being added to the album's booklet. We hope you'll like our idea and will support us, financially or through telling your friends. Love, Sylvia & Leonard

mixing techniques and synth : book references ?

Hi everyone, I've been try to compose for several months/years now and i'm never pleased with the mix and with the synth sounds. My use of effects and filters are more or less random. I'm self-educated here but not very well ;-). More, each time I listen to my tracks on a new system, it sounds different. So I'm willing to learn some mixing techniques (and some synth techniques as well). I'd like to have a better understanding of sound mixing and synth. A little studying will do me good. Do you know any good book references about these subjects, french or english ? Of course if they tackle the subject of free audio software as well I would just be great. Thanks for your help ! jy

OT: Acoustic cargo cult science and brown noise

More acoustic Cargo Cult science: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a73p6EORPyY Very funny-- kind of like a British MythBusters. But, unlike the MythBusters, not very scientific. Where to start? The frequency is supposed to be sub-sonic, so "turn down your TV"... assuming you're on a home theatre system and your TV has subwoofers. And the sound is supposed to resonate with the digestive system, so they wear earphones to protect themselves-- that'll work great. Also, the sound they played sounds like it's in the low-midrange, not subsonic at all. As they say over there across the pond: complete bollocks. -ken

Q: HOWTO: extract the beat times from an audio track

I want to create an animation for a track my band recorded and I'm wondering how to get it in sync. It's a straight 4/4 piece but we weren't playing to a click track so the tempo varies slightly. Most of the advice I get is "Open it in Audacity (or similar) and eyeball the beats from the waveform" but it would be very cool if there was an app that could read the audio and spit out the beat times. recommendation for a handy midi player

Yesterday I found a very interesting project (through the pianoteq website) which seeks to 'transcribe' player piano performances to midi: http://members.shaw.ca/smythe/rebirth.htm Now I'm looking for something that allows me to play back those performance easily, all in a row. It would be nice if it could be hooked up to anything, so it would just need to play back the midi, without reproducing any sound itself. I simply want to listen to all those performances. Ardour 2.8.8 released

Finally, its June and Ardour 2.8.8 is finally here. Although this is primarily a bug-fix release, some of the "bugs" fixed are so pervasive and significant that they could almost count as new features. In particular, automation editing has finally arrived at a place that people with experience on other DAWs may consider actually usable. Issues with alignment of new and existing recorded material are addressed too, and there are lots of other bug fixes for issues small and large (including 3 or 4 crashing bugs). Thanks to motivation provided by the Mixbus project, there are also yet more improvements to AudioUnit plugin handling on OS X. Anybody using Ardour 2.8.7 or earlier should upgrade to enjoy increased stability and better functionality. This is the last feature-adding release of the 2.8 series. The next release of Ardour will be version 3.0-alpha1 (unless notable regressions are discovered in 2.8.8). IMPORTANT FIXES Dramatic improvements to automation editing so that it more or less works as anyone might expect. DOWNSIDE: for this release, the display of automation data is not updated in realtime while in write/touch mode. This will be fixed in a future release. Correct very strange and erratic punch recording behaviour that would create regions on tracks that were not record enabled Fix crash when zooming canvas repeatedly Fix handling of files larger than 2GB that could cause very slow reload of existing sessions (speedup was from 9 minutes to 30 seconds) Subtle but important change that may fix issues with recording not placing material in the correct location on the timeline Correctly order signal processing after adding a send (fixes issues with placement of recorded material) Regions overlapped by 2 other regions will now no longer semi-randomly fail to be audible during playback Region exports and bounces now use region fade in and fade out curves. USEFUL FIXES Save & recall port insert latency values JACK Latency = 256 menu option now works Importing files with the "Sequence files" option now works Cleanup LV2 "external gui" extension support Clear solo state when deleting a route that is soloed Notify user that deleting a route will save the session state Ellipsize long names in the track/bus inspector Force exported AIFF files to be big-endian Anchor the crossfade start and end points so that they cannot be edited Correctly retain MIDI bindings for global transport controls Do not burn 100% of a CPU's available cycles if disconnected from JACK Put the fixed size columns (check marks) on the left side of the mixer's track and group lists for easier access to their functionality Fix strange behaviour when dragging region(s) towards time zero Rationalize track selection and range selection Make selecting a range in mouse range mode work even if there is already a time selection When splitting N-channel regions to mono regions, each new region shows up as its own region, not a child of the original Clearing an automation track of data no longer generates an error when next loading the session ("Cannot reconstitute XML history node ...")
