Hello, today I found in the dumpster this pc-keyboard which is neither ps/2 or usb, but has these two connectors which to me seem midi game and plain midi. http://imgur.com/1H72s.jpg I connected the midi plug (purple) to my soundcard but it doesn't seem to output any midi things (note on, off,cc etc.). Should it and it is just broken or do these gaming devices use a midi physical port but an entire different protocol than music-midi? thanks for any help, renato

Yes, and there's no option to disable it in BIOS. I never went further with this last year, as I just tried another kernel. But the problem recurred with my Fedora 13 install disc! One solution is to add floppy.allowed_drive_mask=0 to grub's kernel options :)

[LAU] new AVSynthesis videos, new video channel

Greetings, I now have a channel on YouTube : http://www.youtube.com/user/newnairobi1 At present I've put up videos of my AVSynthesis work and of my students playing in local recitals. More things coming soon, probably *not* family videos. Most recently I've placed some new AVS demonstrations on-line : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ttkQzkW0e8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=peIdUpJ1nl4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAlb8DfEUCE In order, they present the Env Map, Warp, and Colorized Sobel shaders (aka transforms). Each video includes an original Csound audio track. These are demos, not complete pieces, but Csounders and other synthesists might find some of the sounds interesting. [LAU] sample preview program?

Hi everyone, Does anyone know of a simple application for previewing samples? Something that lists all supported audio files in a given directory, that you can click once and hear the sample? jack support would be necessary. I've searched the archives and found this question asked before, but I wasn't able to find an answer. Any pointers or suggestions would be very welcome. Thank you! -- Josh Lawrence

[LAU] Silence detection/automation

Hi - I recently found out about JACK through SilentJack no less and realize I may have found a good tool to do silence detection for my audio streams. I've got Jack setup and running along with JackMeter and SilentJack. This is running on an OpenSuse box (11.3) running Gnome and qJackCTL. I am running VLC to open my audio streams (mix of Real, Windows, MP3, Quicktime). Does anyone have any tutorials for automating Jack though? It seems cumbersome to have to recreate the various audio connections (say after rebooting). I don't see a way to statically assign output ports using VLC. Ideally, I'd like to automate as much as possible upon logging into the machine. Last question - Does anyone have any examples of scripts to run after SilentJack has detected silence? Obviously, I was thinking about an email alert. I wasn't sure about the syntax needed though. Thanks for any help or pointers. Tim

See the syntax when qjackctl suggests connecting qsynt, for example. qjackctl is great! By running applications with different jack-names I can easily manage a few setups, qjackctl will not joke on many potential connections. After some practice setting it up is very quick. The rule is: You only connect the patch, the ports of the patch are then connected serially, if available. Slices of an audio buses need just separate patches. Regards, Georg

[LAU] Houseman - Tranquility (album made with GNU/Linux)

Houseman is my side project aimed at repetitive music. I've always wanted to do some "boring house", but each my attempt often took me much farther and I would end with a melodic track. So Houseman is a project which does no such thing. It takes the music no further that repetitive stuff usually goes. However, another thing typical for Houseman is that tunes sometimes develop in unpredictable ways, so that the track begins with one thing, but ends with a completely different sound. Do listen to the debut album. "Tranquility", second album, however, I am also very happy with. A very tasty album, with a bit of an oldskool raw flavor to it and composed fully on GNU/Linux, using Hydrogen, Qtractor, CALF Fluidsynth and Rakarrack.
