Hello,
One important way in which I have made music on Linux in the past is
using text-to-midi software to create tracks. The software I used back
then, and have used occasionally in the past few years, is midge[1], a
text-to-midi programme written in perl with a strong emphasis on
randomisation (randomised timing, weighted random note selection, random
block selection, etc.). Allas, it does not appear to have been updated
in nearly six years now, and, though it still works fine for my
purposes, I'm wondering whether I should switch to something new before
diving back into text sequencing. Does anyone know of other such
programmes offering similar randomisation features? I've heard good
things of Bob Van Der Poel's mma, but its focus seems more on templating
styles and quick composition: is that correct?
Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated, as always.
Cheers,
S.M.

I'd second the AVLinux recommendation.
I don't see the i386 as a liability. It just works out of the box on
32 or 64 bit hardware.
I've had almost no xrun issues with the liquorix kernel.

The Hydrogen team is excited to announce the first 'Hyrdogen Spring Drum
Kit Contest' !
As you all know, a drum machine is only as good as the sounds it produces
-no matter how many whistles and bells it boasts.
Some time ago there was a small poll on the Hydrogen site asking the
Hydrogen users (aka 'you' ;-) what feature they wanted more than anything
else.
The answer was clear : "more and better drum kits".
The goal of this fun contest is simple : with your help we can expand
Hydrogen's sound library with some great new drum kits, and since this is a
contest there are some really neat prizes to win!
So if you have been playing with samples and thinking about creating a drum
kit, but then decided not to do so after all : now is the perfect time to
push yourself and go that extra mile. Once it's done you'll feel so much
better ;-) Or maybe you have already made a drum kit in the past but
didn't think it was worth submitting? Think again and share your hard work
with the rest of the world!
Curious ? Check out the details on the contest page

Hope to hear from you soon !

The new release includes following fixes:
*tooltips (partially based on Jonathan Wilkes's implementation) that appear in form of speech bubbles next to the object they relate to. Reliable detection of objects. Also works with gop objects.
*major overhaul of the font resizing dialog/logic--font resizing made simple (everything scales proportionately except for gui objects whose properties obey user-set settings)
*font-based zoom using ctrl+mousewheel
*font resizing integrated in the infinite undo
*hslider/vslider instead of possibly corrupting data due to its values tied to the drawing logic output unaltered data where possible (e.g. float values that fall within the range of the slider)
*minor cosmetic improvements to hslider/vslider
*several minor bug-fixes
*hslider and vslider redraw their slider properly when resized
*Minor build/documentation improvements
*Removed selection as part of the undo queue as it vastly limits ability to use infinite undo's potential
L2Ork supports builds for both 32-bit and 64-bit Linux systems
and can be downloaded from the usual place:
http://l2ork.music.vt.edu/main/?page_id=56
On a related note, disis_wiimote has been bumped to version 0.8.0. It now supports automatic detection of all extensions including motionplus. New l2ork version of libcwiid required (also available on the same page). Coming up in the next release (hopefully!) soon, support for pass-through mode (e.g. motionplus + nunchuk).
As usual, bug reports are in high demand, so get busy and let me know of any potential hiccups.

I wrote this same issue to the Ardour user group but didn't receive any
bites.
I have 2 automation points left at the very beginning of the song that
won't delete.
All other ones were able to be deleted via a 'shift' + 'rt click'.
The final 2 won't delete!
Clicking on 'clear' in the automation window has no effect as well.
Any pointers?
Thanks!
Dear list,
I discovered this faderbox, which has motorized and touch-sens faders
"Icon iControls Pro"
see http://www.icon-global.com/ShowPro.aspx?ID=135
I wonder if I could use it on Linux under Alsa with the generic usb midi
module. I understand that it is primarily geared towards MackieControl
and similar protocols, and wonder if it can do plain midi as well.
The website says:
- iMapTM software included for easy mapping of MIDI functions
- Class-compliant with Windows XP, Vista (32-bit), Windows 7 (32-bit &
64-bit),and Mac OS X (IntelMac)
Does anyone have experience with this device already?
thanks and have a nice day!

hallo all,
i have got a bcf2000 and downloaded the B-Control editor, v0.6-beta1
(unofficial) by Jens M Andreasen.
now i do not find the way how to connect the hardware (bcf2000) with the
editor.
if i connect the bcf2000 to my computer via usb, aconnect will find it
easily:
...
Client 24: 'BCF2000' [Typ=Kernel]
0 'BCF2000 MIDI 1 '
....
but when i start the editor, aconnect is not seeing it.
i think that i must do some connections between the hardware and the
editor in order to use it?
any hints or tips?
cheers,

Computers as tools are hell.
In the 80s I bought software to handle my Roland MT-32 with the C64.
IIRC the software was from Gerdes, anyway, it doesn't work for my C64.
At that time I was a coder, I hacked the software, corrected the bugs
and made it available for free. A time-barred crime :p.
Some time ago I won an iPad2. There's amazing audio software available,
but since I upgraded iOS from 5.0.1 to 5.1 even using the iPad as a Book
reader doesn't work, since I'm unable to sync most of the apps,
including iBooks and some of the amazing audio software.
Linux cause the less pain for me, anyway it cause much pain.
I'm unable to program nowadays computers ... it sucks, it seems that
"personal responsibility" is = "be an expert".
I'm unable to produce forks and knives, fortunately I can buy "common"
forks and knives and don't need to eat with my hands.
Hell!
Without humor I would run berserk!
:D
Ralf
PS: The classic Atari ST was the best Computer I ever used! Completely
painless! I never used any Win, MacBlabla (Dirk Brauner borrowed me a
Mac + Logic + a Firewire Moto) or anything else ex the Atari ST that was
painless.
IMO Linux cause the less pain, but anyway it cause unsustainable pain.
A friend of mine through away his Mac through the window and today he
doesn't use the computer for music anymore, he only use some M$ crap to
get computerless music hardware at EBay.

Robin, here only "New “LAU” theme" works, but it links to the old style theme. Here "Emanuel Rumpf" isn't available.
Alternatively I get "Thosten Wilms" and "default", but both don't work.
Cheers!

Hi,
In searching the wiki today for a command-line connection utility for
jack, this page:
http://wiki.linuxaudio.org/apps/categories/jack
will not load for me, but all other pages I have tried will load just
fine. Not sure if this is the proper place to report the problem, but
hopefully whoever manages that wiki will see this message.
Thanks!
