I unfortunately had to download/code "new" versions of software recently due to burglary in what used to be a studio. This is what I found:
1. I never realised just how much time I had spent writing freaking .desktop files, designing icons, creating MIME types, associating programs, and mucking about with menus in general. Of course, where does one send their bunch of xdg files for others to use? It's not like packagers accept outsiders commenting on their sub-standard packaging. I have binaries installed right into /usr/share - how did that happen? I told the packager and was told basically where to go "NOOB". (30 years of CM production, 15 of those years on Linux. I'm a noob, ok, sorry).
2. What happened since 2010? About half my VST and windows programs stopped working. New wine sucks; lots of xruns, plenty of crashes, some programs won't even install or run. New kernel blows hard, I'm getting Xruns on a machine that's over 4-times as powerful as the last. Never, ever had that before. Why do we always have to have "cutting edge"? Screw the 1.5 release, the last good one was the 1.1.13/28/32, series. Use THAT tried and tested version for your install and allow upgrades later.
3. So far, NONE of my old multi-app projects have been immediately useable, due to the above. An OS upgrade has killed some projects. It shouldn't happen.
So I went searching for Ubuntu Lucid/KXStudio, just like I ran without incident for 3 years...it ran everything I could throw at it. There seems to have been an all-out scorched-earth policy towards Ubuntu Lucid. It no longer exists. KXStudio just wants to "upgrade" me - the original repos have been razed as well - but I don't want "upgrade", I want a wine that works and a kernel that can keep up on hardware that is 4 times faster than before.
4. And now to the biggest gripe. On my laptop, I decided to create a login for my partner so she could quickly check her mail without me having to unblock facebook etc. When I finally got her to log in, the DEFAULT BACKGROUND WALLPAPER HAD A HENTAI CHICK IN A SUBSERVIENCE POSE. WTF!? Partner not amused. Are all the distro people 15 year old losers?
5. Related to 4 and 1: can we just spend an hour checking the defaults on the desktop before releasing stuff? KDE as presented by the distros is worse than XP off a Dell ghost disk. Horrible, horrible, horrible defaults. Nepomuk/Strigi disaster turned on by default. Why? We already knew it was a disaster. If you're gonna say "we're a music distro", then set it up for MUSIC not for eye-candy.
So basically, there's a whole layer missing between distro and public. Q&A

The "three days rest" I'm talking about are "three days rest" based on
psychology. If you and we are caught in thinking about a conflict, it
usually won't last for longer than 3 days, even with some so called
personality disorders.
If I want you to be quiet, e.g. because I would think that you might
have got a serious disease, I wouldn't reply, to enforce such a rest.
I don't know if you have got a serious disease, since I don't have this
impression, I feel free to reply to this thread, because I'm interested
in freedom. I just can't understand why this can't be done at another
list.
The thread already started, but became OT for the OT :D at

Chris has taken the liberty of renaming the subject ;).

And if reflexion is impossible for somebody and there is a level of
suffering for this person or for other people caused by this person,
than help is needed. It's not possible to help everybody, but in this
case it perhaps is possible. ... perhaps not needed, I don't know the
OP, but maybe it's needed.

Grrrr, hard to come through the list again.
The original mail is outdated, but I would like to know if somebody ever
has successfully used an exciter, enhancer, vitalizer etc..

I can't listen to the link at the moment, but I experienced exciters
never as useful. I don't remember the different exciters I tested, but
at least my Behringer Modulizer and Behringer 2442-FX-PRO provide
exciters and I suspect that I at least also tested one of them. However,
all exciters I tested, not very much, caused similar odd sound.

Perhaps an equalizer is the best way to go.
Have you ever used an exciter for something else? AFAIR I never recorded
using an exciter, just tested it and disconnected it.

Hi everybody,
This small email just to say that the new version 1.0 of DidJiX - a live
Linux distribution based on ArchLinux and focused on Mixxx - is available
at http://didjix.blogspot.com <http://didjix.blogspot.fr/>.
Good turn 2013.
Regards, Pascal.
OK.....
Friend sends rough mix of drums and bass in mp3 form.
Tells me to record new guitars to this.....(he expects a wav file in
return).
This "master in mp3 form" makes me a bit nervous. Why?
Because I don't know enough about the mp3 encoding process.........
Is it "lossy" simply because it rounds-off stuff?
Or does it actually drop samples (like various lossy video encoders?)
If so, the wav file that I send him could get weird sample-wise when he
imports it into the "real" session, no?
Am I picking nits here?

Please don't write things like that in a way that could make people
believe it's a general attitude.
If there is a bug in my software, I want people to report it any way
they like
(as long as it's electronically). Bug reports should always be
appreciated.
I think/hope this goes for many other developers.
Hi all
I've just recorded two tracks on Ardour and I have recorded again two
parts of a (normal) track. I've not created a new track, I recorded it
over the first recording.
I don't know what's the best way to do this...
Anyway, it worked fine except for few seconds at the beginning, where I
can hear both recordings together. The area is highlighted in yellow and
has two lines crossing.
How can I remove the old recording and keep only the last one?
And why it happened?
Thanks in advance

Hi,
I write to ask about session manager solutions. I use ladish for 1 year
and these days I'm trying jack-session (using qjackctl) to see how differs.
I hear about non-session but never used.
Which is, in your opinion, the best solution actually?
Here my newbie considerations:
ladish
------
pro:
- I can execute also unsupported applications (level 0)
- integrated patch UI (gladish)
- extra-features like rooms (state?)
cons:
- I need to write manually app name (command) when create a new studio
- I need to "remember" options to my applications to save presets or similar
jack-session
------------
pro:
- save the state of current jack applications, without write a single
command
cons:
- unsupported application are not executed when session is opened
- lacks of features as rooms or grouping
I know may be some of cons are about the actual UI instead of session
manager itself.
Because I use occasionally music production software, my first
requirement is to save the session in terms of connections and opened
applications, and then reopen with 1-click.
And, finally, I often like to include non-audio applications in the
session (let's say editor to annotate).
At the moment, since few applications support jack-session, I think to
continue to use ladish. But I found really boring write each time
commands application when creating a new session.
Any tips? Thanks!
Ivan
PS
I would like to use current qjackctl session-manager + a DE session
manager, but I haven't found a tool to save and open named session with
a list of current application... I'm thinking about writing myself
