quality?" and a lot of other questions.
Hi list, hi Iain,
most likely I'll test a PreSonus AudioBox 1818VSL within the next days.
I already compared it's phones output with the phones output of a RME
HDSPe AIO. A while ago I had bad luck, there was too loud computer
noise audible by the apart from this good phones output, but at
the moment there's no computer noise anymore. One reason for me to
switch to USB, is to separate the audio interface from the computer.
However, the sound quality of the AIO's phones output is better, than
the phones output of the PreSonus. Strange, since old home recording
gear and old HiFi equipment provide usable phones outputs, but nowadays
phones outputs of home recording equipment seem to be unusable. My
Behringer mixer's phones output is disgusting, too, but the other IOs
of the mixer are ok, maybe it's the same for the PreSonus. Actually I
want ADAT IOs and a usable head phones output. I don't care much about
the other IOs, so this already could be the showstopper for me.
USB is tricky. First the PreSonus didn't work with Linux and also not
with Windows XP, then I found an USB port that at least allows to use
the PreSonus with XP, an OS just installed for tests. I hope I
understand how to use alsamixer with this card, a brief test wasn't
promising.
To be continued...

Ralf

Is there a Jack Audio Appliance commercially available?
If not, I would like to build one. Here are my requirements
1) Accepts 4 or more input audio streams at Xonar 7 rates (24-bit channels at 192KHz).
2) Makes the audio streams available to Jack clients on the network.
3) Is compact and reliable.
What would be a reasonable compact platform to host such a device (processor speed/cores, memory, etc.)?
Also, is it feasible to jack up the data rates even higher - say to several megasamples per second?
Thank you-
James
V 1.5.0 - The Robin
Still learning new songs and singing sweetly in the middle of winter.
Vector control now has its own dedicated button on the main window. A little
bit of shuffling meant that space could be created for it while actually making
the window look neater, and the master controls more obvious!
As a further protection against rogue sequencers making assumptions, any
attempt to set an invalid bank root will be ignored. The same was already true
for banks themselves. Also, on first time startup, discovered roots will be
given ID numbers starting from 5 and in steps of 5. This makes it a little
easier to re-arrange them to your preference. We recommend that you don't have
zero for either, as this is the usual assumed number.
If working from the command line, listing roots and banks will identify the
current ones with a '*'. Also, we forgot to mention at the last release that
listing instruments, as well as showing the current bank and root you are
listing from, will suffix each entry with A,S,P depending on the combination of
AddSynth, SubSynth, Padsynth.
Channel switching has now matured to a 'Solo' feature accessed from the mixer
panel. When described to a sound engineer his response was "Of course it's a
Solo. A bit unusual, but where else would you put it?"
Another new feature is one that has been asked for several times - a crossfade
for overlapping note ranges in instrument kits.
Filter tracking could never quite reach 100% so if using it to get 'notes' from
noise it would go slightly out of tune. Well, now we have an extra check box
that changes its range so that instead of -100% : 98.4% it will track 0% :
198.4%
These new features are the first we've introduced that actually change
instrument files. However, they are backwards compatible in that older versions
of Yoshimi simply ignore them.
Many of the controls now have active tooltips that show the current value when
you hover over them, so you no longer have to click the control to see its
value (and probably change it at the same time). Also, many have real-world
terms. dB, Hz, mS etc.
The biggie is MIDI learn. Yes it's finally here, and very full featured. It can
be reached from the 'Yoshimi' drop-down menu, and tooltips will remind you of
how it is used. There is a screenshot on our sourceforge page.
More details on all of these can be found in the 'doc' directory.
Under the hood:
We've made a small, but useful improvement in note-on behaviour and a more
significant one is in the planning stages. Note-on is when the greatest load is
put on the processor.

Hi guys, galls.
A friend of mine has a start-up called brickeffects. This is a service
where you can up upload a CAD model of anything
(toy cars, penguins, mickey mouse etc). What you get is the prescription
how build the model out of Lego bricks. And you get the bricks
themselves by mail delivery!!
This may seem off-topic, but I thought since many of you might be makers
this interests you.
Their campaign is at

Have fun building,

Hi fellow LAU's!
This is a kind of a small pre-release announcement of our new Album
"Turnabout", in the next week it will be available in retail outlets
and announced elsewhere but it's already on Soundcloud so I thought
I'd post it here on LAU...
This was recorded and produced on Ardour 5 and utilizes a variety of
FLOSS and Commercial plugins including Ardour Team, Harrison Consoles,
linuxDSP/OverToneDSP, Guitarix, Calf, U-he + SWH, CAPS, TAP, Furse
Ladspa's. We also did a lot of work with mic placements and ambient
stairwell miking as well as simple line-delays for natural reverbs.
*ALBUM NOTES*
"Turnabout" is our second Rated Blue album release following 2015's
"Three Walls Down". Where "Three Walls Down" was initially a
collection of songs for posterity "Turnabout" is a more cohesive
collection influenced and written against the backdrop of the 2016 US
Presidential Election (no we're not American but when the neighbor's
house is on fire you pay attention!!). Our core musical inspiration
remains the gut-level immediacy of the Blues within the collaborative
interactivity of a guitar trio but stylistically and sonically
Turnabout roams much farther afield than it's predecessor and is
probably best summed up as 'Alt-Blues'.
Turnabout opens with "Straight Up" a funky inspired plea for the
media to cut to the chase. "The Second Sister" touches on gender and
sexual equality. "When You Got a Name" leans heavily toward Prog and
examines lives left behind by the cult of celebrity . The latin
influenced title track "Turnabout" traces the insidious rise of
Reality TV and it's troubling consequences. "Unsteady" surf-rocks out
and rips on the unreliable nature of mavericks and "You" questions a
seeming lack of world leadership. "Man On a Wire" closes the album
with a collection of vignettes ending on an unresolved chord.
If you are a Blues or Rock fan becoming weary of well-worn Blues
cliches and tiring of flashy virtuosity we invite you to give this new
release a listen and hope you'll find our 'songs-first' mentality an
appealing alternative within the Blues/Roots genre. Thanks for reading
(and listening).

Hi,
Just wanted to share something I've been fiddling with this week.
AMEN $ Mother Function
https://youtu.be/qTQoE5UHgP8
One sample, one function. Live coded single function demolition of the most
ubiquitous sample in modern music. Takes a little while to get going ..
working on that .. amazing what sounds you can get from one sample and a
little maths! :-)
This was created in Praxis LIVE, which was recently presented at the
International Conference on Live Coding. I had this idea while I was
there. It utilises a few useful things for live-coding per-sample
functions that got added in v3.
Best wishes,
Neil

Hello,
There's a new type of controller that's in the works. My impression is
that it seems fun and expressive. It would even be more fun (or any
fun at all...) if eventually 1) it succeeds and 2) it becomes possible
to use it in Linux.
It is basically made of swappable silicon modules with embedded
electronics. It looks like a toy and IMHO that's the advantage. As it
looks like a toy, the name Joué ('played') refers to both this aspect
and the musical playing.
Yes, they have a kickstarter page and they got some 58,000€ so far.

Hi list,
I'm trying to find a way to use an RME Multiface mark I with an old RME
cardbus interface. My laptop doesn't have a cardbus slot but has an
ExpressCard slot. I've read old threads of people successfully using the
cardbus interface with a cardbus-ExpressCard adapter on Windows. Has
anyone done this on Linux? From what I read, what's needed is a an
adapter that requires no drivers.
Thanks,
Iain

Hi
I've made a new analogous simulation, this time it's a simulation of the
Foxx Tone Machine.
Foxx Tone Machine is a Octavia Fuzz pedal from the early 70s.
you can get the simulation as LV2 plugin here:
