Hello everybody!
Qtractor 0.8.1 (sticky tauon) is out!
Release highlights:
* JACK Transport mode switching on main menu/tool-bar (NEW)
* Main menu Track/Navigate/Next, Previous wrap around (FIX)
* Auto-backward play-head position flip-flopping (FIX)
* JACK Transport tempo/time-signature in-flight changes (FIX)
* Sanitized audio clip zoom-in/out resolution (FIX)
Obviously, this one dot bug-fix release and everyone is then compelled
to upgrade. On the side, a couple of notes are also worthy of mention...
Besides some other stray thoughts, you may be asking yourself, after
reading those crappy release highlights above, what the heck that
"in-flight" tempo / time-signature change-fix is all about?
No stress. There's always a reason, as if reason won't ever prevail,
above all else...
So, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, should here be told:
jack_link [8] is the dang reason. And then, you may now know and play
the badass with Ableton Link [7]. Keep in mind that jack_link [7] is
kind of a toy, so please, have it under a child's perspective ;)
You can still play all along with your band fellows, don't get me
wrong. You all have to be on the same machine or in the same local
network segment (LAN) anyway, just like yours truly QmidiNet [9] does
(and recommends). But that's probably one hell of a disparate story,
although sharing the same networking concept... move along!
Whatever. When in doubt, please ask me. Whenever you find yourself in
despair, you can also ask me. But take note that I made no promises nor
guarantees that it would ever work for you. And this goes as far as in
any formal disclaimer can go.
The hard truth is: your are on your own. But please, enjoy and have
(lots of) fun while you're at it ;)
As second note, this project has finally called in for its own vanity
and internet domain name: qtractor.org [1]. I guess it was about time.
Nuff said.
Qtractor [1] is an audio/MIDI multi-track sequencer application
written in C++ with the Qt framework [2]. Target platform is Linux,
where the Jack Audio Connection Kit (JACK [3]) for audio and the
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA [4]) for MIDI are the main
infrastructures to evolve as a fairly-featured Linux desktop audio
workstation GUI, specially dedicated to the personal home-studio.

Change-log:
- The View/Options.../Display/Dialogs/Use native dialogs option is now
set initially off by default.
- All tempo and time-signature labels are now displayed with one decimal
digit, as it was in mostly everywhere else but the time ruler/scale headers.
- JACK transport tempo and time-signature changes are now accepted, even
though playback is not currently rolling; also, changing (JACK) Timebase
master setting (cf.View/Options.../General/Transport/Timebase) will take
effect immediately, not needing nor warning for session restart anymore.
- Track/Navigate/Next and Previous menu commands, finally fixed to wrap
around the current track list.
- Current session (JACK) transport mode option switching is now being
made accessible, from the main menu and drop-down toolbar buttons, as
well as user configurable PC-keyboard and/or MIDI controller shortcuts
(cf. Transport/Mode/None, Slave, Master, Full).
- Fixed some auto-backward play-head position flip-flopping, when
opening a new session while the previous was still on rolling/playing
state, hopefully.
- Added French man page (by Olivier Humbert, thanks).
- MIDI clip changes are now saved unconditionally whenever the editor
(piano-roll) is closed or not currently visible.
- Audio clip peak/waveform files re-generation performance, scalability
and resilience have been slightly improved.
- Some sanitary checks have been added to audio clip peak/waveform
re-generation routine, as much to avoid empty, blank, zero or
negative-width faulty renderings.
- Do not reset the Files tree-view widgets anymore, when leaving any
drag-and-drop operation (annoyingly, all groups and sub-groups were
being closed without appeal).
- Make builds reproducible byte for byte, by getting rid of the
configure build date and time stamps.

I'm not that optimistic, IOW I don't think that those strings have a
real guitar string tension. More likely they are slackly and won't hurt
princess and little school girl fingers. From the tactile point of view
I've gut serious "prejudices". I've got tendencies to use my keyboard
to play drum samples and usually ignore my elCheapo drum pads, so I'm
careful with buying some other plastic gear. All the times I had the
money to buy a MIDI pickup for my guitar, I bought something else to
make music. I suspect that a MIDI pickup is more usable, than those new
devices and I also guess that most of us will find something more
useful for the money. However, I might be mistaken. If I would have
"enough" money, I would buy both devices ;). It would be nice to play
cords and tunes on a guitar alike thingy, perhaps the nature of those
devices would allow to play cords and tunes at the same time, as
Stanley Jordan does on a "normal" guitar.
Hi,
has somebody experiences with one of those mobos
https://www.reichelt.de/Mainboard-AMD/2/index.html?ACTION=2&GROUPID=6132&SH…
or any other mobo that is currently on the market for less than 100 EUR?
I need a CPU + 4 or more GiB RAM + a mobo + a power supply for around
200 EUR, because I don't trust my current mobo and power supply anymore.
A while back I planned to buy a new mobo, but after a BIOS reset
everything worked good enough, so I was stupid enough to "forget" to get
a new computer. However, I don't feel good with the mobo anymore. Maybe
it's still ok, but it also might be that it already is broken. I
shouldn't wait until it's too late and I don't have any money at all.

Ralf
Hi,
I'm thinking about getting an Arturia Keystep to control both my Volcas
(MIDI) and my MFOS Soundlab (CV/Gate).
Does anyone have experience with it on Linux?
>From what I understand you have to use Arturia Midi Control Center to
change some of its settings, I would be interested in knowing if it
works with Wine (just to edit the settings live CV range and so on, I
don't want to use the sequence editor and other fancy stuff).
Also, if someone wants to recommend some other Linux-friendly small
keyboard controller similar to the Arturia Keystep (so with MIDI + CV
and a sequencer, at least) at around the same price tag, I will be happy
to know about it.

Hi!
I've got a 12-channel-amp and a 10-channel-(output-)firewire-device.
I'm using the great eq4q-plugin inside of (the also terrific) carla for
a digital crossover and for equalisation. I also have 4 boxes with 2
speaker each, directly wired to the 12-channel-amp.
I wonder if there is a convolution-enginge-plugin that can be used
inside carla with the same functionality like BruteFIR for making a
digital room correction.
Any hints welcome.
Greets!
Mitsch
Hi list,
I might have had asked this before, but is there a mechanism to save and
recall parameter settings of zita-rev1 -at1 -dp1 when used as standalone
jack application?
Thanks!
Peter
Hi,
I rearrange my computer and run into some issues that might be caused
by broken hardware, if so I don't have a clue what hardware might be
broken.
Actually the issues started after I put in a TerraTec EWX24/96 and
replaced a HDD by a SSD.
However, I have several old but still good HDDs, 2 brand-new HDDs,
old and brand-new cables and the brand-new SSD, so I tried different
setups.
I own two TerraTec EWX24/96, both already were used with the same mobo,
at the same time, but since several month I used the PC with both
TerraTec EWX24/96 built out.
Later today I'll remove this TerraTec EWX24/96 and will build in the
other, into the other PCI slot.
JFTR jack does start when selecting the RME PCIe card and running Arch
installed to the SSD doesn't cause issues.
Something is fishy with the TerraTec EWX24/96 and/or something else. I
also had issues with a brand-new external USB device and the brand-new
internal HDD, so the power supply, as well as the mobo or anything else
could be broken. OTOH one issue not necessarily must be related to
another issue.
