A HDSPe AIO is fine with kernels from 2.6.9 to 3.5.3. I don't remember
all kernels I used, but at least 2.6.9 threadirqs Debian, 3.0.23-rt40
AV Linux, 3.0.30 threadirqs Ubuntu Studio, 3.4.4-rt14 Arch Linux and
3.5.3 Arch Linux do work.

interesting... thanks! since you're including AVLinux, can i assume these are *all*
32-bit? i wonder if i'm getting hung up, trying to run 64-bit?
and, what hardware are you on? i suppose it's possible there's some weird
interaction between the more recent kernels and my ThinkPad T520.
cheers!
