In the UK, most people of my generation picked it up either from late
night Radio Luxembourg or Pirate radio. It was the only way you could
hear *really* original music.
In Germany there was a nightly radio show. "WDR open house" played all
kinds of "avant garde" music. AFAIR this was in the early 80s. I don't
remember, but could imagine that they might have played Isao Tomita
too. However, AFAIK he wasn't well known in Germany. I guess today he's
well known by people who read mangas and watch animes, maybe more
popular than by people interested in music, than in comics. I should
ask a few people who are older than I'm. Perhaps I'm just too young.
