It's a minor point, but still: Fedora doesn't do this either. It's
PackageKit (or some such) that does, and it can be safely removed (or
not installed in the first place).
The only Linux distro I've met that did that "automatic update thing
whether or not you like it" by default was Ubuntu. Debian doesn't. And
I'm sure it can be turned off even in Ubuntu.
