IMO Qtractor is usable for both, the classical musician and the

My recommendation is Qtractor. It has got a few
seriously weak
points, but is powerful and easy to use for many tasks.
I second this to the max, but Jostein seemed interesting in a tool for
composing songs, and not just record them
