Hi
I'm currently running debian/unstable with my home-made-but-unpatched
kernel 2.6.11-10, but is considering switching to ubunto.
Why?
1) How well will ubunto with stock kernel perform in
realtime (csound)
compared to debian with hand-made-but-unpatched kernel?
I don't think there will be any difference. I have installed ubuntu
on a machine (because it was the only distro that worked on that
particular hardware out-of-the-box) and I cross-bred it with Demudi
and Debian (which has created a whole other set of conflicts and
problems). Add demudi to your apt sources and install the multimedia
kernel if you don't want the hassle of patching and compiling
yourself.
2) How does the availabilty of audio application in
ubunto compare
with debian/unstable?
I find that ubuntu is far less complete in terms of binary packages
than Debian. I use both debian and demudi in my sources.
3) Anything/other experiences that I should know of?
I had some specific needs and found that ubuntu was lacking some
resources. I can't really remember which they were, but off the top
of my head I believe that if you compile a lot yourself and/or use
less 'popular' software, Ubuntu is a little defficient. I would not
advise anyone to use it for anything other than just getting one's
feet wet with linux. In fact, I also installed it on my mom's
computer and it's great for her needs (which are limited to playing
solitaire, browsing the net, doing email and writing a journal).
