Hey guys!
I just discovered the Wired project. I think I've seen their site before but
looked at it just now and installed it on my Ubuntu Jaunty (they have the
9.04 deb).
What can I say?
A pity. A pity that such a promising project, with beautiful GUI and
seemingly a pretty solid workflow is dead. In fact, I am surprised that less
appealing projects get developed while such a great Reason alternative which
could solve many people's problems is just sitting there.
I poked around it, but nothing seems to work. Somewhere it is mentioned that
JACK should be supported, but it does not give me jack in the list of
devices. It does give ALSA but on my rt kernel it doesn't glitch only on the
maximum buffer (frames) setting, somewhere beyond 4000, giving a pretty
large latency, unusable basically. I tried it again and later could get
better latency though I chose same options. Needs researching.
There seems to be a piano roll, but I could not yet figure out how it works.
The drum machine works well, both samplers seem to work ok too, though what
they play does not get synced to the drum machine or maybe I just did
something wrong.
Anyway.
If I had any resources, I would put them to work on Wired. I mean, it looks
great. Even their logo is super nice. Designers behind the team were really
talented. Who thinks the way I do?

Sorry about top reply. On my phone and I don't see a way to do email
replies properly..
I think you hit the nail on the head - the graphics are really nice on
wired - unlike most of the other linux apps (with possible exception
of bristol, renoise etc.)
However, graphics do not make any difference to the sound whatsoever
(although I guess they kid people that they are more "professional" -
see all the vst plugins).
In the end I've come to realise that for me flashy graphics often get
in the way of making music - far better to be able to access all
parameters from the keyboard instead of having to click tiny
"realistic" looking buttons,sliders,knobs etc.

Neil sequencer looks nice, although I am not sure it will compile on my
jaunty. In fact, would be interesting to see if its usable.
Qtractor, lmms, Renoise and EnergyXT have little in common with reason, in
my view. Besides, Renoise and EnergyXT are proprietary apps which I am not
interested in.
As for beautiful GUI, of course functionality is more important, but a nice
GUI can be inspiring. I think it is important to many musicians.

sequencer with a synth and drums included in a monolithic piece of
software. With the exception of a lightweight sampler plugin, qtractor
can do all that using dssi or lv2 plugins and piano roll, with the
extra advantage of being able to record audio. As far as I am aware,
Lmms, Neil, Renoise and energyXT2 all have the same or better
functionality as Reason. The only difference I can see is the GFX and
the method of entering notes. Or am I missing something?

Well, you should go ahead and read up about Reason in wikipedia. Wired is
basically
a Reason clone. It is different to Qtractor. Qtractor is a more general
purpose sequencer,

Bristol looks grand, everything is layed out before you on a single screen
(for nearly all the synths) and it functions fine. Zynaddsubfx on the other
hand.... Quite complex, but very flexible.
But comparing the looks of a synth to a sequencer? lol wut?!

I knew that, I was just supplying another garden instrument name in case
anyone had a new program on the way and was looking for a garden instrument

If I use qjackctl to start jackd, the connect window shows two capture
ports and two playback ports.
I can then start a pair of meterbridge dpms, and connect their inputs to
the capture ports. Signal applied to the mic jack then shows up on the
meters. So I deduce that the capture ports are related in some way to
the mic jack.
If I connect between the capture ports and the playback ports, should I
then expect the signal to be present at either the headphone or the line
output jack?
And (this may actually be the same question), the soundcard has numerous
analogue inputs (mic, line, CD), at least two outputs, not to mention
whatever the mechanism in the digital domain is to relay internet radio
etc. Can they all appear as ports in the qjackctl connect window? Is
there some special imprecation needed when I start jackd?

They are capturing whatever is being sent to the internal digital input
of the device. So anything you have enabled in the mixer settings [line
in, mic, cd] will be heard in jack.

Yes, if you have unmuted the master output and turned up the pcm
channel. Some cards also have additional input controls that need to be
tweaked.

This is dependant on the card. If it is a multichannel device then you
may see multiple inputs but for most(all) consumer cards the inputs are
mixed at hardware level and presented as one (stereo) to jack.

most consumer audio interfaces (which it sounds as though yours is)
can only deal with a single input stream/connector at once. you
therefore have to choose which one to use using a hardware mixer
application (such as the terminal-based alsamixer), since JACK offers
no control over this (its highly device specific, and so not part of
JACK's mission.

I saw Charles Mingus a couple of time in the 70s. On one gig Ed
Blackwell played drums. Mingus announced a piece that included Blackwell
on the saw, he gave a litle lecture first on how it's a real musical
instrument and we should respect it. I don't recall the piece he played,
other than that it was pleasant sounding music, nothing atonal or
especially far out.
Mingus was very serious about it all, he didn't want people thinking it
was a comedic thing.
