Hi people,
I am a member and composer of a band who plays with Bagpipes (http://www.wargsang.de)
Since we do not find enough time anymore I want to do more work with my computer instead
of real instruments. But there is no plugin avaible, especially not free software. So I
want to do my own. Bagpipes are tricky instruments so instead of recording samples and
make a .gig for linuxsampler I think a real plugin or jack standalone software is better.
Who wants to develop a plugin with me? I can do the recordings, I know how these
instruments works and I guess I can figure out how to make it sound not like crap. Maybe I
can do the GUI, too :)
Of course in the end it will be release free and open source.

Since this is essentially a monophonic instrument (apart
from the drones) the best approach IMHO would be to use
a modular synth such as AMS, or synthesis tools such as
SC, Pd or Csound.
Apart from getting the right 'steady state' sound
(which I guess is not very difficult) the key problems
would be:
- Correctly implement the transition between notes.
- Model the building up and decay of air pressure
at the start and end, and its modulation by the
player (I don't know how much this is used, if
at all).
- Provide the right acoustics (some 'open space'
reverb, probably mostly reflections).
IIRC SuperCollider has a 'bagpipe' class somewhere in
its example files. Very probably Csound has something
as well.

Oh man this would be awesome..Im a big pipe fan and in all of my projects I
try to use a bit of it, and have to rely on SoundByte's Bagpipes VST for
that (I could never get a real pipe player, nor am I good at playing winds).

As often this question is really egoistic because I want to sample my own bands
instruments. But I want to share it.
I don't want to rely on supercollider or csound for sampling. A LV2 plugin would be a
good thing, I guess. I have no interest to make this avaible for Windows or Mac.
But I can't make lv2 plugins on my own. Thats the call for help.

It sounds like an interesting idea, but I don't really understand what
you have against csound or sc? LV2 plugins would still rely on similar
underlying processing.
And you are interested in using samples, but not keen on making a gig file?
Can you roughly outline how you would see the samples being integrated
into the synth. How would it differ from what's possible with gig?
I think bagpipes are perhaps the hardest instrument to get to sound
even OK on a computer, but perhaps that is partly from the lack of
pipes musicians being involved in the creation process.. This could be
very nice!
I should point out now that I have absolutely zero skills in
programming lv2 or similar, so I'm unlikely to be of much help in this
project. I would have thought the gig format might be the best
approach for a sample-based instrument though?

It kind of depends on the sound you're after. I've got a reasonable
simulation of uillean pipes by synthesizing the drones and then miking
up a practice chanter. If you're after a decent pìob mhòr sound then
you're basically going to need to record bagpipes ;-)
As with so many "real" instruments, it's less down to the actual sound
and more down to the technique - even a really cheesy synthesized or
sampled guitar can sound quite realistic if you play it properly. Now,
implementing a bagpipe *controller* would be something I would be
interested in - detecting fingers over holes and detecting airflow is
easy enough, but maybe detecting fingers half over the hole to slide a
note would be tricky.

I play an old Akai EWI (wind controller) model. There is a new model, cheaper
(around $300), and USB. Bundles Garritan software and instruments library for
Mac and Win, without bagpipe sounds.
