I am running the attached .asoundrc. Works lovely for dmixing multiple
ALSA applications using the same soundcard. I'm having Firefox showing
a YouTube clip via Flash player, Audacious playing an audio file,
another video clip via mplayer, etc. All simultaneously no matter
which sample rate or frequency each one is using, as plug is also
being used.
What I am not being able to do is adding an OSS application to the
equation. If i.e. I start Audacious using ALSA, then mplayer using OSS
can't be heard. Also if I start Audacious using OSS, then mplayer
using ALSA can't be heard either. If I set both of them so they use
OSS, only the first one run obviously can be heard. If I set both so
they use ALSA both of them can be heard simultaneously in a flawless
way.
As OSS is not in fact OSS but an OSS emulation that uses ALSA, I
though that the same rules applied to a demixed ALSA application would
apply to an OSS application. But is seems this is not the case.
Am I doing something wrong? Is it even posible making ALSA and OSS
applications share a soundcard output simultaneously? Any ideas
welcome, so thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, no. OSS is greedy, and thus needs to grab the device. It has
vmix as something like dmix, but that only works in an OSS-only environment.

If you read the ALSA docs, in particular where they
describe how you can construct new devices on top of
existing ones, they surely give the impression that
arbitrary networks such as
hw:0 ---- dmix -------- app |---- app
| |
|---- plug ---- dmix -------- app
|
|---- oss ---- app
where 'plug' - a misnomer - is the thing that resamples
changes format etc. and oss does the same along with
providing a different API, should work.
But they don't, and it's not difficult to see that
it would be hell to make them work. IMHO, the basic
approach is wrong.
I know that oss emulation is not implemented as
suggested by this example, but even if it were
I doubt very much if it could be made to work.

Well, on my bog-standard VIA-based laptop (Slack 12, stock 2.6 kernel,
driver snd-via82xx), I just had three instances of mplayer playing
three different radio streams at once, two through ALSA and one
through OSS(-emu) and vice versa. I made sure my .asoundrc was out of
the way first, and it Just Worked. So perhaps the first thing to do is
bounce the .asoundrc out of the way and see if that changes anything?

As OSS is not in fact OSS but an OSS emulation that uses ALSA, I

ALSA plugins are implemented in userspace, while the OSS interface is
a kernel driver interface and therefore is implemented in the kernel.
To get sound card sharing with application that use the OSS interface,
you can:
- use a sound card with hardware mixing (VIA AC'97 controllers,
Sound Blaser Live, and some other obsolete chips); or
- use a wrapper that tries to redirect OSS interface calls to a
userspace emulator (aoss, but it doesn't always work); or
- use a kernel driver that redirects OSS calls to userspace (requires
kernel 2.6.31 and OSSP, which currently works only with PulseAudio
and not dmix).
