Please don't reply off-list. On the list there are several subscribers
who maintain an Ubuntu flavour, that AFAIK by default combines jackdbus
and pulseaudio, they could help you much better than I could do, since
I categorically refuse pulseaudio.

Thanks Ralf, but it was all working with jack in
place before I set
this up. Pulseaudio is latest version from LAU so I don;t see why
there should be a problem.
You should mention what pulseaudio version, jackd
version etc. you are
using, since "latest version from LAU" is not really useful. Perhaps
mentioning the distro and it's release could be also helpful. I never
used pulseaudio and never ever will use it, I don't have it installed,
so I only could provide a link:

You seem to use KXStudio or Ubuntu with KXStudio repositories.

a chat and a forum.
That you're asking for help on this list is ok, I only want to explain,
that subscribers of this list use different distros. This neither is an
Ubuntu, nor a KXStudio related mailing list.
AFAIK there is nothing like a LAU distribution.

This was after a reboot of system.
Ran pacmd list-modules which showed module-jackdbus-detect presnt but
not module-jack-sink or module-jack-source.
confirmed that I'm running jackd2 not jackd1:
$ dpkg -S /usr/bin/jackdbus
jackd2: /usr/bin/jackdbus
When does pulseaudio use module-jackbus-detect to check if jack is
running? Do I need to start jack
before pulseaudio?
Tried pacmd load-module module-jack-source and module-jack-sink. They
them show up in pacmd list-modules
but still totem hangs when started.

to there will be a box with the name of your audio device. clicking on
that gives a drop down ... select jack sink. Sound should return. Then go
to the output devices tab and find jack sink. There is a square button
with a checkmark in it to "set as fallback". clicking on this makes that
the default.
In my case, I unload the PA alsa module and the PA udev module so that
pulse only ever sees the jack sink and then run jack at session start.
In my opinion, Pulse has the front end jackd should have always had and
jackd provides a stable backend that pulse should have always had.

jackd2 in debian/ubuntu ships with both jackd and jackdbus. Many jack
applications that find no jack server running will start one using jackd
with the temporary flag (we hope). There have been at least some versions
of jackd where this was broken and the started jack server would continue
running. This would block jackdbus from starting. This bug has been fixed
now for over two years. However, ubuntu shipped the buggy version in their
LTS (14.04) and there may be applications that do not bother to set the
temporary flag. Running jackdbus at session start is best practice to
solve this problem. Or use some other method of getting desktop audio into
jack without pulseaudio. On my older system I just did a chmod -x jackd to
solve that... I don't need to any more.
As it happens, I set everything back to the failing
situation and rebooted
the laptop.
It now works as it should, with QjackCtl in control. There's no sign of a
pulseaudio
running and yet totem is working?
