Hi there!
I'm looking for the best MIDI-Controller for using Ardour as a live
mixing console. I know the Mackie Control Universal (Pro), but I wonder
if there is another (not-so-well-known) manufacturer that does the job
even better.
By the way: What's the difference between MCU and MCU Pro? And how does
this affect Linux Users?
Is there a manufacturer that offers Linux Software for (better/easier)
configuration?

It depends on how much control you want, and precisely what control you
want, and what you think is a reasonable <unit-of-currency> cost per
feature.
The big problem with the Mackie Control protocol is that it only allows 8
channels per MIDI port, so if you want to build up a more serious size
console, you need several device connected via multiple MIDI ports, or a
bigger device connected by >1 MIDI port.
By the way: What's the difference between MCU and MCU Pro? And how does
this affect Linux Users?
It has no impact on Linux users at all.They are mostly just different
physical builds and build quality.
Is there a manufacturer that offers Linux Software for (better/easier)
configuration?
The configuration is all in Ardour, and has basically nothing to do with
Linux at all.

that it only
allows 8 channels per MIDI port, so if you want to build up a more
serious size console, you need several device connected via multiple
MIDI ports, or a bigger device connected by >1 MIDI port.

9652. (I don't use the S/P-DIF.)
Really, just 8 channels with the MCU? Doesn't it have pages to flip
through?

Sure. I'm talking about the number of physical faders. You can bank through
any number if that works for you.

No, that's using completely different technology, absolutely nothing to do
with MIDI binding maps.

Control Protocol?
MCP is based on MIDI. It is not, however "generic MIDI". If you have a
device that supports MCP, it is better to use our MCP support. If you have
a device that sends MIDI but does not support MCP, you can create (or use
an existing) MIDI binding map. The Behringer devices can be set to do
either. Mackie Control (and the "Pro") version only support MCP.

Yes it pages, but the protocol itself will only allow 8 strips per device
meaning that if you want a 16 strip surface it requires 2 midi ports.

There are a number of devices that do mcp. The latest is the x-touch (not
the compact or mini... though the compact is better than the BCF2k) There
are also the SSL Nucleus, faderport (Ardour has a mode just for this),
Qcon, Avid S3 (in Mackie mode). There are also some mixers that will act
like mackie controls on their own or with middleware.
For any MIDI control surface, using MCP in Ardour if the surface supports
it, will give the better experience than generic midi will.

I should add that if you are using a BCF2000 you may find this useful:

bottom of the screen above the controller.
