I just stumbled on this, a GPL software synth I had never heard of
until now. I thought you guys might be interested :

Sure, but there is no standard installation location for the VST headers.
and other users prefer to build without VST,
I'll probably make a separate package for the VST plugin, so people can
install the standalone/lv2 version without it.

I'm open to suggestions on how to handle the distribution issue with the
VST SDK better. For licensing reasons can't distribute it with the AUR
package, there is no non-personalized download URL, and there is no VST
AUR package to depend on, for the same reasons.

Steinberg has changed their website
recently so that people can download
the SDK without needing a developer account.

No, it compiles with both, but AFAICS only the latter is available for
download from the Steinberg site and of course the PKGBUILD needs to
decide which to use in sources and to fix the include path in the
Makefile accordingingly.
My updated PKGBUILD downloads and uses the VST3 SDK now.

Yea.. I think it's ALSA only right now. I assumed that JUCE built for JACK
as well but I guess that's not the case. I'm looking in to this.

Dummy audio guy here ... so I start up helm and get the nice gui screen. I
have a keyboard connected to the computer. Jack is NOT running. So, how do

Nice!
Grabbed the sources from github.
Compiled it and played around a bit.
I really like it.
Ran the standalone version via alsa.
Used qjackctl to connect my midi keyboard.
Hanged once for some reason. Both UI and audio output froze.
Didn't seem to use much cpu at that moment though.
Also there seems to be some audible aliasing.
Otherwise, great stuff!

I encountered some bugs. For the LV2 version, Carla can't find the
plugin in the package. And with lv2_jack_host, I get a segfault. I tried
jalv.gtk. It loads the plugin, but sound is scratchy, it stutters. Jack
logs show no X run, though. Unusable in LV2.
I noticed there is a standalone binary. It works wonderful. *But* looks
like it's ALSA only -- no jack! And it doesn't look possible to choose
the audio interface to use.

So this is working for some folks. I grabbed the binary off the site and it
boots nicely. But, I have no idea how to send a note to the program. Can
anyone share the secret?

The port shows up as ALSA MIDI named "Juce Midi Input".

Can't reproduce these two with the version I compiled from the Git repo.
The VST version on Linux also works well with Tracktion 6 as a host.
But the CPU usage is very high, up to 40% on my moderately fast laptop
(i5-3230M CPU) for a single instance, regardless of the version.

Is this while you're playing notes? What is polyphony set to?
The cpu usage will scale with how many voices you are playing.
The UI also is a bit CPU hungry at the moment. Drawing all those arcs for
the modulation take a lot it seems..

With a simple patch (two slightly detuned saws, no modulation) and 8
voices I get a CPU usage between ~33% - 40% for the LV2 version (with
jalv) and a few points less with the standalone version while playing
chords.

see if I can reproduce this.
