Greetings,
Last night I got a wild notion to try the Ableton Intro demo under Wine
1.1.44. I installed and opened the program without incident and played
around with some settings, but haven't tried to get audio out of it yet.
I'll see what happens today.
I wondered if anyone else has tried this arrangement. If so, are there
any special considerations re: the audio/MIDI I/O ?
I'm not serious (now) about running Ableton, I'm just curious to see
what the rep's all about.

I tried running Abelton using Wine a few years back. It crashed on
startup for me, but that was some versions ago(of Wine and Live).
I gave up on that and setup Specimen and AMSynth to replicate what I was
doing in Live. I wasn't using it for the slick 'grooving' stuff that is
a lot of the hype.

Hi Brian,
Thanks for the report. I ran a little test with it last night, it seemed
to run okay. More tests today.
Most of my students use Windows music software at home, and I think
they're primarily interested in the slick grooving stuff. :)

students get such good bargains on buying original windows
software... :P

The current demo (ver. 8) seems to work with WINE +
jack.. although I
only opened it and played something.

It's pretty stable but seems to consume a lot of
(video) ressources for the
vumeter display...
AFAIK the guys at Ableton thought it'd be a laugh to implement the UI in
python...
Even when I had a decent CPU running native WinXP then in a simple Live
session the UI was laggy.

Do you mean they use it ?
Python is great for managing UIs and can handle faster C-compiled modules.
Even when I had a decent CPU running native WinXP then
in a simple Live
session the UI was laggy.
Strange, all my Live sessions runnning on WinXP run smoothly, even on a single
CPU but with 2D accelerated video drivers.

i tried getting live8 to run. using latest wineasio and win.
it sort of works but gives xruns with low latency.
to get rid of these xruns i started patching wine, but it still did not
yield proper RT performance, and the ui is pretty sluggish.
at a period size of 1024 it started working nicely.
however recording audio didnt work.
(complains about not being able to open the wav file)
if you just want to look at it. choose a big jack period size and allow
a timeout so it doesnt get kicked upon causing an xrun.
but serious usage in wine is probably out of question.
