Hello,
I'm new to all of this.
I'm trying to make FIR convolution on a Raspberry Pi 2.
I have succeeded in making Jack2 working (Playback only, no full duplex).
My alsa player can connect to Jack2 and jack2 to the hw I2S sound card,
Fine.
Now, this is what I'm trying to acheive :
Start Jack2 (with jconvolver as input and I2S soundcard as output)
Start jconvolver and Connect it to Jack2
Start Alsaplayer and Connect it to jconvolver as the audio input
Here is my asound.conf

Thank you i saw my mistakes.
However, although I have no more errors, I still have no sound from
squeezelite and from mplayer , I have the feeling it is not passing through
jconvolver.

You probably need to connect everything...
jack_lsp -p to see a list of all jack ports.
jack_connect to make connections.
The connections from jconvolver to the sound card can be
made automatically: just add them to the /input/name
lines in the config file.

However, now I would like to know if all this could be done without jack ?
I have the feeling the sound is not as good as what I got from BruteFIR or
from Folve
I don't want to use none of these as they both have their drawbacks.
Any idea os suggestion to make my setup better ?

Sorry, I made a mistake: you need to connect the *outputs*
of jconvolver to the soundcard, i.e. add the soundcard
ports to the /output/name lines.
3/ Start squeezelite : squeezelite-arm -o jack
This will probably connect directly to the soundcard,
not to jconvolver. So you get sound, but without the
convolution.
What you can do is:
Add the connections from squeezelite to jconvolver to
the config file (on the /input/name lines). Then
- start squeezelite,
- disconnect it from the soundcard using jack_disconnect
with the correct port names,
- start jconvolver, this will make all connections.
This assumes that squeezelite does not need to be
restarted for each track.

But didn't got sound.

and got sound, but after listening to a known track, I understood that it
was not convoluted.
So what i just did, and now it looks like working.
I changed again filter-44100.conf, this way :

Another problem !
Unfortunately, Jack server crashes after a while !
/JackAudioDriver::ProcessGraphAsyncMaster: Process error
JackEngine::XRun: client = jconvolver was not finished, state = Triggered

JackAudioDriver::ProcessGraphAsyncMaster: Process error

It looks like a xrun problem, I have seen that it happens, whith the
Raspberry Pi and maybe to prevent it
instead of : jackd -d alsa -d hw:sndrpihifiberry -r 44100 -p 256 -n 16 -P -S
One should use : jackd -d alsa -d hw:sndrpihifiberry -r 44100 -p 16 -n 16 -P
-S
But this doesn't work for me as I get an error message when I start
jconvolver :
Fragment size is too small
This can maybe solved, as jconvolver has some tweak for Fragment size built
in.
But, here again, it is beyond my understanding, sorry !
Note, that I used BruteFIR and moved to jconvolver just because of the same
kind of problem, convolution crashes after a while (between 2 and 5 hours of
running).
What can I do, if anything can be done ?

Did you try using JACK with a number of periods of 2? 16 is quite an
uncommon value. And you're also using -S, never had to use that on my
Raspberry Pi's with Wolfson/Cirrus Logic cards. I do have to use -s
(softmode) in order to keep JACK running. Also try raising the latency,
so use something like a period value of 1024:
jackd -d alsa -d hw:sndrpihifiberry -r 44100 -p 1024 -n 2 -P -s

Completely off-topic, but since I made the same mistake (to the general
merriment of the native speakers present): the verb form you are looking
for is *convolved*, meaning "has been through a convolution process".
The adjective *convoluted* means something is overly complex or
difficult to follow. Now evil minds might say "precisely", but I guess
once you've dug into this a bit more you will find jack and jconvolver
to be very friendly and reliable tools, and not at all convoluted.

Please think for a second. It doesn't make any sense to connect
an input to an input.
You always need
jack_connect some_output some_input
For example
jack_connect jconvolver:out.L system:playback_1
jack_connect jconvolver:out.R system:playback_2
Note that the system:playback ports are *inputs*, even
if they correspond to the outputs of the sound card.
Think of these ports as the inputs of the D/A converters.

3/ jack_disconnect system:playback_1 jconvolver:out.L
-> OK
Can't be OK, this is input -> output, and it should be the reverse.
4/ jack_disconnect system:playback_2 jconvolver:out.R
-> cannot disconnect
Same.
Try this:
1. Start jack (with -p 256 -n 2).
2. Start squeezelight.
3. Use jack_lsp -c to see the ports and the connections.
Probably squeezelight has connected to the playback ports,
and you have sound. If that is the case, use jack_disconnect
to disconnect squeezelight (2x). Verify again with jack_lsp -c.
There must be no connections.
4. Start jconvolver.
5. Use jack_connect to connect squeezelight to jconvolver:in (2x).
6. Use jack_connect to connect jconvolver:out to the soundcard (2x).
If all of this works, you can put the connections in the
jconvolver config file. Then if you start jconvolver last
it will make all the required connections.
*** But then you still need to remove the direct connections
*** from squeezelight to the soundcard. If you don't, you get
*** a mix of the sound with convolution and without, and that

Doesn't my connections problems originate from my asound.conf
For recall, here is my config files :
asound.conf :

At east this explain why squeezelite doesn't connect if jconvolver isn't
active
So I tried to come back to the ealier version of asound.conf where
squeezelite connect directly to jack.
Than,
I start Jack,
I start Squeezelite

rawjack:out_000
system:playback_2
rawjack:out_001
rawjack:out_000
system:playback_1

I can disconnect

It didn't work, I should again disconnect and reconnect to make it work
So I conclude that my latest setup was the good one

Sorry, I made a mistake in my latest post as the jconvolver config was not
set !
It explains why I had bad connections.
So once more
I start Jack,
I start Squeezelite
I get sound obviously non convolved
/root@DietPi:~# jack_lsp -c
system:playback_1
rawjack:out_000
system:playback_2
rawjack:out_001
rawjack:out_000
system:playback_1
rawjack:out_001
system:playback_2/
I make the disconnections
/root@DietPi:~# jack_disconnect system:playback_1 rawjack:out_000
root@DietPi:~# jack_disconnect system:playback_2 rawjack:out_001
root@DietPi:~# jack_lsp -c
system:playback_1
system:playback_2
rawjack:out_000
rawjack:out_001

I start jconvolver
And I get sound again, obvioulsy convolved

So now the procedure is :
1/ Start Jack : jackd -d alsa -d -r 44100 -p 256 -n 2 -P -s
2/ Start jconvolver
3/ Start Squeezelite
I told you to start jconvolver *last*. If you start it before
squeezelight, the rawjack ports don't exist, so the connection
can not be made.
The means that the following can not be correct:
I get sound.
And here is the result of jack_lsp -c
/system:playback_1
jconvolver:out.L -> OK, I guess
system:playback_2
jconvolver:out.R -> OK, I presume
jconvolver:in.L
rawjack:out_000 -> OK,
jconvolver:in.R
rawjack:out_001 -> OK,
jconvolver:out.L

jconvolver:out.R
system:playback_2 -> ???
rawjack:out_000
jconvolver:in.L -> ???
rawjack:out_001
jconvolver:in.R -> ???
There is nothing wrong with the last four, they are
the same as the first four. But these connections
can exist only if you start jconvolver last.
Than, as There is a kind of mystery,
There is no mistery. These are the correct connections.
