I'm still trying to get my multiface+cardbus recognized.
At the moment it makes no difference if the
card is in the slot or not when I modprobe snd-hdsp
Now I'll just suppose that I patched the driver right
and the problem is with my pcmcia setup.
I've never used any pcmcia devices so this is quite possible.
I have a hp xe4100 laptop
with a pcmcia slot that takes one card
of any type (I, II, III) at a time.

What does a working kernel configuration look like?
Here's some of mine that I thought might matter:

I have pcmcia-cs installed with rhl8.0
(rpm's called kernel-pcmcia-cs-3.1.31-9)
but I have no idea what to do with it.

I don't even know what info you people would need
to be able to help so I'm just dumping this stuff.

Try this. Pop out the card, start a terminal window, do "tail -f
/var/log/(syslog for Debian boxes, or messages for redhat based systems)
What do you see? Do the CS services say that it found a card? Does it
recognize it?
Also quadruple check your firewire cable between the Multiface box and
the pcmcia card. My digi face will exhbit the same behaviour
when I forget to plug the cable in.

I see nothing. I can pull and push the card as I like
and... nothing.

Seems to me that something is starting up with a bit of coughing.
(RME cardbus was inserted while these were generated.
Don't know if there's a difference)

Also, I don't know if it matters, but my kernel (2.4.19) is lowlat patched
and has acpi (no patches) compiled in.

Seems to me you might be having some problems with the pcmcia functions.
The machine
should show something in the logs when the card is poped in or out.
Untill that works Alsa can
not talk to the card.

Do you have any other cards you can try? Otherwise I would see the
pcmcia site, maybe check on the mailing list. The developers seems
fairly resonsive.
