Hi all,
I have a fully up-to-date PlanetCCRMA FC3 machine - 700Mhz P3 with about
640MB of RAM.
I bought a cheap second-hand RME Hammerfall 9636 recently, in the
knowledge that it was untested.
I've plugged the card in, and run alsaconf. I can start jack with
qjackctl, and connect my audio applications to all of the cards inputs
and outputs, and so on.
I have a Behringer ADA8000 connected to the first lightpipe output.
However, I'm having difficulties getting a clean output - whichever
software I use...
For example, when I play audio, and route it to output 1, all I can hear
is some approximation of white noise, until the volume gets to somewhere
near maximum - when I can hear a very distorted version of the original
sound.
Does this help at all?
I'm *hoping* that I've just done something wrong, and that the card
isn't fried. ALSA detected the card fine though, for what it's worth.

settings using amixer but so far it shows me nothing for the 9636
while it shows me lots for the AP2496. I'll look at that a bit more
but maybe you know how to use amixer or have some better info on this?

I have a 9636 (same card) with all 4 ADAT cables going to two I/Os on
my HDSP 9652.
I always watch the 9636 indirectly by using hdspconf on the HDSP 9652
end. It just works and I don't have issues.

I've experienced exactly the same - amixer shows me lots for my cheapo
CMI8738 card, but nothing at all for the DIGI9636.
I don't know whether or not his is expected, but I think Paul Davis may
have found the answer to my problem elsewhere in this thread.

At the moment, I'm either setting the switch on the ADA8000 to 'Master',
or to 'Slave: ADAT in'. On either setting, the 'Sync locked' light on

This does sound as though it might be the cause of my problem. The card
*was* previously in a Mac - I asked on this list earlier whether it
would be compatible, and someone said it was. I probably wasn't very clear.
Is that the chip that sits in a slot on the card? Is it an EPROM that I
can get hold of and replace myself? I seem to remember seeing chips for
RME cards labelled with different revisions on eBay...

They are usually pretty helpful. Obviously I didn't have a clue
about this one since my 9636 works and always has, but my HDSP 9652
has been through a number of firmware revisions. For that card RME
provides an app that writes firmware updates. Unfortunately it's
Windows only so either set up to dual boot of move the card
temporarily assuming that such an app exists for the 9636. It may be
part of the driver package. Not sure.

1.5 is just fine. You don't need newer or older to use the card
perfectly well.

I think it's time for me to say thanks!
You hit the nail right on the head, Paul. I've just picked up a W36
EPROM for the DIGI9636, and it worked instantly.
Even on cheap little PC speakers, I can hear an improvement. Now, time
to save up for some Alesis MII active monitors...

I was lucky with my RME as it was set for PC and worked from day one!
Its a superb card with Linux and Ardour.
I'm using the Behringer truth actives for monitors (didnt have to save a
lot, from ebay!!)
They sound good.

That was a small error earlier - I meant Alesis M One Mk2 Actives.
The reason I'd like a pair of Mk2s is that two of my friends at
University each had them, and I really liked the way that they sound. I
have to be honest - the fact that they are made of materials like carbon
fibre and pure silk (with blue LEDs) appeals to me too!
The Behringers look comparable though (and a little cheaper too...)
