Hello, I'm just getting started with creating electronic music in Linux and
I'm looking for a good sampler. Specifically, I'm looking for a sampler
that will allow me to assign a sample to multiple keys AND perform
pitch-scaling without changing the duration of the sample. I've tried
Specimen and Renoise (both great pieces of software) but neither seems to
automatically stretch/compress the duration of the sample to compensate for
the pitch shift. I look forward to hearing your suggestions.

I've never used it for
those purposes, but give LinuxSampler a try, it
might do what you're after.

I actually had some difficulty getting gigedit (used to create instruents)
to work on my machine, so I'm hesitant to spend considerable time on it
unless I can confirm that it has this functionality. Any LinuxSampler users
care to comment?

I've never used it for those purposes, but give LinuxSampler a try,
it might do what you're after.

I don't know and somewhat doubt that Linuxsampler can do this at this
time, but I know that .gig is not the only format it supports, there's
at least also .sf2 (editor: swami) and recently .sfz, which is text
based.

Considering your preamble I would suggest having a look at Pure Data
(aka PD)... although it doesn't specifically do what you're asking it
would be easy to create a sampler with those characteristics (wouldn't
be surprised if it already existed) and of course much more, and as you
are getting into electronic music you'll find many situations where
you'll have to create your own 'tool' for the job. PD might easy this
task a lot, and IMHO is also great fun.

There is StretchPlayer, using RubberBand to play single audio streams at different

(While Renoise does not have any native timestretch at all it does have scripted tools for
both RubberBand and Akaizer.) I believe both these will only work offline though, but it
would be possible to create the note ranges as new samples and them create your instrument
out of the extra samples. A lot more work and will then use a lot more RAM, as there is no
DFD with Renoise, but may almost be an idea. But if you are going to create new samples
for each key any sampler would do... But then again you could script Renoise to
automatically create the new samples, rather than having to do it all manually.)

I've had this coded up before, the problem is that if you want to "pitch
shift" each sample individually it really does become pretty heavy on the
CPU. Unless your not *dynamically* changing the value of the pitch shift,
in which case it can be rendered to a buffer & just played back.
I would share the source if it was in better condition, most of it is hacks
on hacks for extra random features... but I can zip it & ship it to
somebody if they'd care to take a look. A JACK client wrapper would need to
be coded up, its only the "sampler / pitch shifter" now.
Best free library from timestretch I know of is the
RubberBand one.
There is also SoundTouch, its LGPL even more relaxed than the GPL of
RubberBand. Its what I used for the project mentioned above.

Eh eh, I see your point there. In fact I said "considering your
preable", that is the OP is "getting started with creating electronic
music in Linux" and I thought pointing to PD would be useful. But truly
PD is quite a beast for just getting started with sampling :)

Hi,
Maybe I'm wrong, but a quick test in Specimen seems to do what you want.
You assign your sample to a note, and then extend the range with right
clic left or right the yellow note up the virtual keyboard.
Please tell if it's ok, or not.

Hydrogen can do the pitch-scaling without changing the duration of the
sample. Not sure what you mean by assigning a sample to multiple keys,
do you mean that different keys on a keyboard trigger the same sample?

That's possible. Create 6 new instruments and load the same sample in
each of these new instruments and adjust the pitch per instrument. In
order to reach the 60-65 range you will need to create at least 40
instruments though (or use something like QMidiRoute or Zonage).
