Hi all
I m writing a simple script to start a few audio apps and connect them
automagically. What I would like is to make certain windows to appear in a
different virtual desktop. For example Ardour edit window in 1, ardour mixer
in 2, pd in three etc.
Is that possible?
I use KDE. Is it something KDE specific?
I tried to google for it but I dont know what to google for really.
Any help appreciated as usual

Hi,
I cannot answer your technical question, but please keep in mind that if
you are using any real-time audio applications, such as those that use Jack,
then switching desktops while doing important audio things will cause clicks
and pops in your audio stream.
That said, I used to place Ardour on one page and Rosegarden on another,
and then pin the Rosegarden transport on all pages to be able to control it
without having it around. Multiple desktops are nice.

You'd have to have xinerama enabled in X, firstly, and the application would
need to be xinerama aware in order to place it's windows correctly. Not many
apps (sound or otherwise) that I'm know of are this aware.
If you're running with xinerama switched on it's a simple process to drag the
mixer window to a different screen though, I do this all the time in Ardour,
and in fact Ardour does remember the window settings correctly, at least it
does for me.
As far as KDE goes, once xinerama is enabled in X11, there are some options in
KDE (version 3+) related to xinerama you might want to play with.

The window manager is often responsible for storing and automatically
restoring this info for specific windows of apps, and each
one handles it differently. I don't know how the default KDE WM
handles this, but that is the place to look. Sometimes the WM
might have an option in the window popup menu for remembering
or storing location (including desktop).

Yes I was reffering to the virtual desktop case.
Sometimes the WM
might have an option in the window popup menu for remembering
or storing location (including desktop).
That was it. I moved the ardour windows where I want them and clicked on
'store settings' on the window menu. I had never noticed that option before.

In KDE you can use the "kstart" command line to do this and a little
more. This is a window manager issue, so if you are running another
window manager, you'll to check what is the proper way to it with it.
I also feel the need for something that setup a whole session (launching
jackd, vkeybd..., doing the proper connection).
