Hello everybody,
I'm trying to install a soundblaster AWE64 (chipset CT5880), with a joystick port to
connect external MIDI devices. I can get audio output, but I also would like to:
- upload soundfonts to this chip,
- use MIDI interfaces from this card, to play MIDI files through this chipset instead of
using Timidity, and to communicate with external MIDI devices
I'm trying to do this in Ubuntu 10.04 (kernel 2.6.32)
Please note that I know quite well how Linux works in general, but I have very small
knowledge in computer assisted music (I'm trying to install this for my wife, who
would like to use rosegarden to write music).

The bad news is that the card you're describing isn't actually an AWE64
-- that's a much older card that uses an ISA slot. The card you have
doesn't have synth support under Linux; in fact, I'm not even sure that
it has a synth, since I think on Windows the drivers simply emulate a
synth in software.
The good news is that if you just want to work with Rosegarden, you
don't need a hardware synth, since you can use both JACK softsynths and
DSSI synth plugins. If you want to use General MIDI sounds, I'd install
Qsynth and the Fluid GM soundfont (from the "fluid-soundfont-gm"
package), run Qsynth, load that soundfont, and then connect Rosegarden
to that.

supported under Linux with this card?
At this time, when I run these commands:

I don't get any sound anywhere.

A common pitfall with Creative (and "soundblaster compatible") cards
is the type of joystick-port <-> MIDI cable to use, happened to me at
least when I got my Audigy2: there are active and passive cables for
this, and you have to use the active one, i.e. with some electronics
(a good part of the actual MIDI interface) built into the cable.

I had an original SB AWE64 (ISA card as stated earlier) with the
original SB MIDI connection kit (joystick port and MIDI IN/OUT).
Rosegarden worked fine with it.
To see if you have the correct MIDI cables for the AWE64, Rosegarden
should spot the MIDI connection. If it doesn't, then it looks like you
have the wrong MIDI connector for the AWE64.
To get sound out of that AWE64, you had to go into the ALSA mixer and
select one of the settings (sorry, I can't remember which one anymore)
that was just a button (on/off only, no volume slider). I think it was
the audio/SPDIF, or Jack, or something. This was the crucial button to
get set correctly to get any audio sound output. Then I used the
ALSACONFIG, ALSASAVE, or whatever it's called now to save those
settings, so that on the next reboot you don't have to go through the
process again of resetting that button.
It sounds like you have a MIDI keyboard. In that case, it's probably
easier to get a USB MIDI in/out cable or box rather than trying to run
down a 1-use only MIDI connection kit for your AWE64. As was suggested
before, let Rosegarden run a synth and use USB for the MIDI.

About MIDI connection with my keyboard, it was just an error of
connection (I had to put the IN cable in the OUT port ...). I can now
play my MIDI files on my external keyboard, and save the notes from by
keyboard to Rosegarden. Super!
About synth, I have installed soundfonts and timidity. It's enough at
this time to play MIDI files, or get sound from Rosegarden.
