Thank you very much for sharing. I have just started to do something
similar for finnish speaking people all around the world :-) .
Based on the Hydrogen, Hexter and real bass and various guitars and
various percussions. I try to do something very acoustic and at home,
too. Home Ubuntu Studio, you know :-) .

By the way I mentioned a problem of Jack Rack with Ubuntu 8.04. The open,
save and save as dialog boxes don't work properly and it's impossible to
open or save any configuration. I get this bug both with my desktop and
laptop. Does anyone have an idea about it ?

All the guitar processing I've tried had good results, but the latency was

I have a latency of 5.8 ms with ardour and it's really enough to play
realtime. The processor load was nearly %40 with an old fashioned AMD2500+.
No XRuns :)

The jack port names have changed in 8.04 this has broken a few pieces of
software. This could possibly be what is going on....

I noticed you dealt with the issue of how to plug one's guitar into the
computer. I thought I would expand on that explanation a bit.
A large part of the reason why so many people have such problems getting
good guitar tones out of software is because of impedance mismatch. The
guitar has a high-impedance output, and going into a low-impedance
input, which is what typical sound card inputs are, will... Well, it
either rolls off the lows or the highs, I can never remember which (I
think it's the highs that go away). Either way, the point is, it does
bad things to the signal.
The solution is an inexpensive DI (direct inject) box, which has an
high-impedance (also labeled hi-Z) unbalanced input for the guitar, and
a low-Z output for the sound card. The vast majority of commercial DI
boxes satisfy this requirement. Oftentimes, mic preamps also have hi-Z
unbalanced input so as to double as a DI.
Just thought I'd try to contribute something to the cause. :-)

Another question about impedance and guitar sounds: I have a Tascam US 122
interface with guitar (hi-z)/line(low-z) switchers on the inputs (2 ins with
preamps and 2 insert jacks) and a guitar tube amp with an effects loop
preamp out (Fender Hot Rod Deluxe).
If I use my amp's preamp to colour my tone before going to the interface,
will the signal coming from the preamp out be high impedance or low
impedance (line). Should I plug the cable into the line level input, guitar
(hi-z) input or the insert jack (since it has already been preamplified).
Would all this be worth the trouble? Will using tube preamplification change
the attainable tones?

It depends on if you like the tube pre better than a computer model of a
pre-amp. I would imagine that the answer would be yes, you do want to
use the pre-amp.

I honestly don't know the answer to that question. I just took a peek at
a schematic for the Hot Rod Deluxe, and I see it has a preamp out, but
it doesn't say what level or impedance. If it is intended for going to
external effects, those typically expect line level unbalanced at 600
ohms, which most sound cards can also handle (some want a balanced
signal, which is another issue entirely).
I will not be held responsible if you try it and blow something up. ;-)

Personally, I would say to get a decent ribbon mic and record your amp
that way. :-) Barring that, skip the complications, plug the guitar
straight into the DI on your Tascam, and start shredding. :-)

If the DI input is hi-Z, then yes, it does. There is also no end to the
DIY options, if you don't mind a bit of soldering and can read schematics.
