Hi,
I'm doing more and more live stuff this days and personally and together in
a
band, I'm/we are using backingband played from some variations of music
players (stereo out).
I'm in a need of a player (or something that acts like a player) for
backing-
band and monitoring purposes(the music plus ticks and individual mixes and
so
on).
Does it exists a program and/or well established practice in Linux that can
do
this stuff in an easy, predictable and quick way when using a computer with
a
sufficent numbers of audio channels:
*Start a song with a foot pedal (space button on a keyboard
is good enought). This is start, stop pause through a play list.
*Providing several channels out (jack/soundcard) for
in house mixers, click track, individual monitor mixes and so on
Ordinary DAWs are probably not good for this, so any suggestions?

Nama can basically do this. You can start/stop via spacebar, you can have a
recorded clicktrack or use the clicktrack LADSPA plugin. Youcan of course have
multiple channels out.
but I'm pretty sure, that Ardour can do the same and more for you as well.
If you want the really easy way, you might give mplayer a try. I think it
does support multiple channel output. No real clicktrack though, so it will
have to be recorded. But you can have a playlist and work your way through it.
You need multi-channel audio files though, no individual track-files as such.
but these could be created.

Ardour can do a lot of this, but it's nothing I want to setup and deal with
when performing on stage, I have other worries under that circumstances:-).
I just want to tap my foot on something and then the right song should
start at once - and the next one in the playlist next time I tap. The
easiest way for me might be mplayer in combination with a simple Bash
script.

Although... you could probably set-up a kind of
'template' in Ardour and
use a bit of OSC for the controlling part.
Have a look at http://ardour.org/osc_control to see ho many things can
actually be controlled via OSC
For example you could just append the needed songs (with individual
tracks and buses set-up as needed) and use markers to create a
'playlist'... just an idea.

The idea is not that crazy, but it still might be to much fiddling on
stage, but I see what you mean and will always consider it.
The thing here is also that appearance is everything. I saw a video of m
last performance and I used a BOSS BR-80 for playing the backing tracks.
The BR-80 is very easy to use (a wheel and hitting the play button for this
purpose - the player is friendly enough to not start playing the next
song), but even that simple thing for starting every song with a finger
looked uncool and not so elegant.
IMO, a single footstep is the only real alternative when you are lonely or
very exposed on stage. One should really look ready for playing the next
tune when finishing one, and fiddling with a music player breaks that.
The way it looks now, I think I would do like this:
-Do a multitrack - One channel for the audience and one (with click if
needed) or more for the musicians. Jack and the card and the mixer routes
everything.
-Start mplayer with a playlist
-Hit the space bar on the keyboard on the floor for pausing when a song is
finished.
-Hit it again for the next song
..or I will probably write a script start mplayer (or play, sox) song by
song in order to make the playing stop automatically for each song. Then I
only have to worry about starting a song from the playlist.
...

I actually took an old keyboard apart for the board inside. I put three
switches in a box (page up, page dwn and something else I don't remember
right now) for scrolling lyrics (have to be able to go backwards too).
Guitar stomp box switches will last a lot longer than a keyboard, you
don't have to worry about hitting something that exits your program and it
looks... well like musical equipment. If you only need one switch, there
are cheap keyboard sustain switches that are still quite robust and
unobtrusive (black). They generally have a microswitch in side that can be
switched to normally open (what you want) if they are normally closed by
default (Yamaha and Roland are opposite, but I don't remember which is
which. I had to change one)
