Hi!
I am looking for a repeater/stutter plugin. The effect is relatively
simple, basically a sound buffer of a user-defined length (probably
relative to song BPM) is recorded with incoming audio, then repeated on
command. I was looking through the plugins that come with KXStudio, as
I'm using Carla, but I didn't find one that does what I want.
Renoise has one built in. It's called Repeater. It's good, but I would
prefer a plugin version as I'm using Carla. And I'd prefer free
software.
There is 'pvsfreeze' which is a cool effect but it does something based
on FFT, which is not quite what I want.
Then there is Cabbage Stutter Filter. The GUI loads&looks OK in Carla
but I didn't get it to work. It doesn't output any audio no matter what
I do in the GUI. Maybe I'm using it wrong.
I wrote a simple softsynth before, Wolpertinger, so I could probably
develop a plugin like this myself. But as the effect is relatively
simple, someone must have already made something like this. I want to
use it in Carla, so the format doesn't matter much - native Linux VST,
DSSI, LV2 or LADSPA would all be fine. Does anybody know of such a
plugin? Or even a standalone JACK program?

Try the Looper. It is not a standalone plugin, but a part of Rakarrack

Illformed glitch2 is available as a Linux VST and should have what
you're looking for. It's not free but gorgeous :)

could easily be done with Pd. :-)

I tried a few of them. For the record, I'll describe my experience:
* rakarrack's builtin looper: more a loop station than what I'm looking
for, but a cool program in and of itself

hangs in an endless loop, eats 100% cpu and doesn't output any audio
* Illformed Glitch2: Tried this one before, very cool effects, might
buy it
* Loomer Sequent: Non-free, didn't try yet

somehow the GUI control for Slice Length doesn't always change the
slice length, and sometimes it only works for 1/4 or shorter. Not
sure what's wrong there. Also there's no way to set the loop length
more fine-grained, maybe works with JACK tempo sync.
* beatslash-lv2 plugins: Author recommends Ingen host, so at first I
tried the Ingen LV2 plugin inside Carla, but it crashed. The plugins
work directly in Carla though. It is possible to create the necessary
Gate CV with 'Control to CV' from the ams-lv2 package. The Beat
Repeater does what I want, although it would be better if the loop
length could be changed while looping. The Beat Slicer is also pretty
cool.

There is also the GxLiveLooper from guitarix. It's a 4 tape looper with
length control.

under BBCut2 that will do stuttering and auto breakbeat generation.

Checkbox to enable/disable is fine with me, and some dial to control
the BPM also a good idea.

The issue with having direct control over the loop length is that
if the control is changing gradually (easy to happen if automated),
the loop will no longer line up with the beat properly.
Masha avoids this by only changing to a new loop length when the
previous loop has finished playing *in its entirity*, which means that
the beat is always consistent with loop segments.
Test this in Ardour/QTractor, feeding in some audio and automating
the Time parameter - particularly noticeable when the loop time is
set to max, listen to it finish the loop.
2) might be nice to have in addition.
This option (control BPM, not loop length) is will ensure that the
stutter-loop is in sync with the beat, assuming the BPM is set right ;)
I'll implement this, I think its possible to do in a backwards compatible
way - I'll have to see.

By having control over BPM *and* sync on/off, there would be a wider

Ok - still out of sync, but more controllable out of sync :D
