Hi. I don't know if this is really the best place for this type of
question, but I don't know where else to ask, so here is my question:
I recently acquired an Arturia MiniLab MkII MIDI controller, and would like
to use it with Linux applications (e.g. Ardour). The basic functions - i.e.
playing notes with the keyboard and performance pads - work out of the box,
but there are also some advanced functions that might be useful, which need
to be enabled or configured through software.
Arturia provides a "MIDI Control Center" for this controller, but of course
it only runs on Windows and MacOS. I would like to be able to replicate the
functionality of this software in Linux.
It seems to me that it should be possible to run the MIDI Control Center in
a Windows VM (I use VirtualBox for this), and use some sort of listener in
Linux to display the MIDI messages that the Control Center is sending to
the device. But I am not aware of any specific tools I could use for this
purpose. Any recommendations?

Would Arturia's MIDI Control Center run under WINE?
It looks like it connects via USB. All you may have to do in a Windows VM under Virtualbox
is make the USB connection available to the VM, yes?

on Windows MIDI connection, so one can dump any MIDI traffic (like SYSEX
messages) to/from Windows applications.

Have you tried contacting them? It's a long shot, but sometimes
manufacturers
do respond positively. You may be lucky, they might just be using sysex
messages.
I haven't yet. But it does seem like they are pretty open to people using
their hardware with whatever software they choose, so maybe it's worth a
shot.

Arturia are extremely protective. I have a microfreak (that I otherwise
love) and I asked for a sysex dump request. They refused to hand it over.
I'm interested in your findings with the MiniLab, since similar
efforts from my part could unlock the secret sysex dump request string for
my microfreak :-)

Isn't another way to use JACKd on windows, route MIDI through JACKd and
watch the logs ?

Wireshark has a filter for sysex messages which is very useful in analyzing
the captured data.
Apart from that the sysex specification (also reverse engineered ) for the
Arturia Beatstep might be of interest to you:

network troubleshooting, but I've never learned to use it very well. Maybe
I will now.

btw. I have a beatstep and a minilab mk I and would also be interested
in finding a way to configure everything in linux. for now I use a
windows vm to do that. I didn’t get the control center to recognize the
devices when I tried it one year or so ago. but wine is
updated/developed really fast, i. e. a new version each month. so
chances are usb drivers and such things will be working one day in wine
(?).
