I have a Fireface UCX, but I never actually use it to full potential. I
have an opportunity to sell it now, but was wondering what I should get
instead. Requirements: USB, 4 channels, Linux compatible, low latency.

I use a Native instruments Komplete Audio 6. which appears to me still
current. Very linux compatible & been reliable for my limited
requirements. I've never pushed it to its limits or tried to extend it
so my knowledge is limited.
Used all 4 channels, midi i/o, phantom power, monitor out, phones.
Not used SPDIF.

I use NI 's komplete Audio 6 too. Absolutely great audio interface, even if the guy in
the shop told me NOT to buy it. Good price. Good preamp and so on.
I'm even recording my auto-prod album with it, and I'm a guitarist: I mean I need
a good preamp which keeps my guitar + amp + SM57 's characters.

Hi,
recording electric guitars with a dynamic mic is ok, but IMO even not
good preamps keep the characters, IOW recording electric guitars with
a microphone usually works good with less good equipment, too. The
quality of the device you recommend might be good, I don't know, but to
prove the quality of the device by electric guitar amp recordings with a
dynamic mic IMO isn't trusty.

Recording via "Dynamic mic" is trusty (and recquired!) for some guys and I'm
one of them. Because it's a bit like a stompbox effect. I mean, if you know the
hardware, you expect it to deliver a particular sound.
As a live performer, I knew how to position my dynamic mic. I tried some audio interfaces
which sounded better than the SB Live, obviously. But the NI K6 really surprised me.
That's what I meant.
Sometimes I record 2 channels: first one = amp + SM57. Second one = dry signal from a
bypassed stereo stomp box, for reamping purposes with guitarix. This "dry" sound
always sound good! Which, once again seemed to be impossible before I bought the K6.
Another example: I used it to record from a dying MiniDisc (no more spdif etc..), so at
Line level: it sounded good and even kept the "coldness" (?) of the Minidisk. I
mean: the K6 didn't add any unwanted coloration.
Now I'm not saying it's the best audio interface: it's a surprisingly cheap
but very good itf working with Linux.

there's nothing wrong with recording a guitar amp with a dynamic mic,
since the amp is loud and the frequency range is very limited for e.g.
much used Celestions from 75 Hz to 5000 Hz,

to record guitar amps with a dynamic mic. In regards to "trusty" I was
thinking about testing the quality of the audio interface's preamps and
other components of the interface. Good guitar amp recordings don't
require very good equipment. Usually you get good results with less
good equipment. Usually you get the response characteristic by taking
care of the mic position and even positioning the mic somewhere infront
of a speaker isn't tricky. The characteristics of the mic and the
interface's preamps etc. are less important when recording guitar amps.

Hello Max,
I have a RME Babyface and it works great with Linux in Class Compliant
mode. Not sure about the new Pro model though but maybe you can still
find the old model for a nice price.

I have a RME Babyface and it works great with Linux in Class Compliant
mode. Not sure about the new Pro model though but maybe you can still
