I read on some sites that it should be possible to use VST plugins with Qtractor by way of
dssi.
On my system, Qtractor depends on liblo7 and dssi-vst:i386 depends in liblo7:i386. If I
install dssi-vst:i386, I cannot install Qtractor. If I then try to install Qtractor after
that, it will uninstall dssi-vst:i386.
So... what does one do to handle this?
FWIW, I've also tried LMMS's Vestige. There is some graphics bug with particular
plugin I need to use, rendering it unusable. So I am in an emergency situation looking for
alternatives.

Try Carla with Windows VST support (carla-bridge-win32 if I'm correct).
It can run as a plugin inside Qtractor.

I am very pleased to report, that as of yesterday, the compilation
issues of carla-briges-win32 have been addressed in the Carla repo and
it builds and runs without problems on my Arch Linux laptop.
This means that it is now possible and practical again to run Win32 VST
plugins in Carla and so far I haven't experienced any drop-outs or xruns
with the synthesizer plugins I have tested with this new version.
A big thanks to falkTX and the AUR packager Joermungand!

confused, I have no solution to that. I just wanted to mention that there
is likely another problem with dssi-vst at the moment. Due to some low
level bug dssi-vst currently does not work under a 64-bit system.

A question regarding Carla, I tried it with MusE the other week as an
alternative. Does Carla expose the parameters of a plugin to the host? I
couldn't get it to but it might be MusE is lacking some LV2 extension.

I'm not running KXStudio -- vanilla Ubuntu here, with some low latency tweaks. My
lecture is on Tuesday -- highly unlikely that I would install a whole new distro and
reconfigure all the software I need at this point. Also, after losing literally 7-8 hours
yesterday to buggy, poorly-featured or un-compilable packages, I'm not exactly eager
to try to build Qtractor or Carla from sources.
Unless somebody can provide "for dummies" instructions with a, say, 90-95%
chance of success. I know that's unrealistic... just saying, yesterday, I went through
three or four cycles of build... build failed... Google... install more packages... build
failed again... Google... repeat... until the Google results turned up nothing useful and
I still didn't have a working build. To protect my own sanity, at this point I would
rather boot into Windows (and that is saying a LOT).
I have a related question, which really belongs in another thread. Shortly.

It's been a long time since I changed the direction of the project, from
being a distro to just software & repositories.
The process to enable those is pretty simple - just install a single deb
file that takes care of everything.
(2 if you're using debian testing or 15.10)
Enable the repos, install the updates and any other package you might want.
No need to mess up the system compiling anything.

I've seen something similar. In which installing a dssi-vst or a
package needed, resulted in removing jamin. A colleague fixed that one
and submitted a patch upstream. The problem was that a package was not
built with the multiarch approach.
Found the LAU post in which I reported that:
Subject: Re: [LAU] Korg microStation editor and Wine
Date: Sat, 17 Jan 2015 18:49:21 -0500
"Update. The liblo7 package was not built for multi-arch and that
created the problem for which jamin (64 bits) had to be uninstalled
when installing dssi-vst:386. A colleague fixed it and submitted a
patch upstream Debian for the liblo7 package."
I guess upstream Debian never took the patch. Rebuilding the package
with multiarch certainly solved gracefully the problem.
