Hi All,
I am still appreciating all the sound card wisdom! I think I shared I am
aiming for the m-audio audiofile 2496, which I am finding on ebay.
I visited our hackers lab here in Toronto hoping to find someone with
enough Linux debian smarts to help me here with the software part of my
circumstance.
As there are apparently many ways I can ahem play the composing side of
things with all the command line tools, I am wondering if folks have
keyboard or workstation suggestions?
I will likely need to be more specific, but do not want to stop the flow of
ideas.

ahem,
I got a very respectful private hint that no one can likely answer without
more specifics lol!
so...best to do this now.
I am first and foremost a singer, but I am writing a great deal these days.
Original songs and arrangements of material for performing.
I do not play on stage, or not yet. Instead my goal with this keyboard or
workstation is to generate the parts, piano, base, guitar, even drums?,
and then use the command line Linux audio tools to create sheet music
for printing. this does not mean necessarily that having the actual audio
is not desired, after all this will help with copyrights. It is not, at
this moment the main goal if this makes sense.
my research is indicating a ton of options, but I will be using the m-audio
card not usb midi.
Is this better?

My first question is what kind of feel do you like? weighted keys are
probably needed for percusive instruments like piano, but for strings,
organ, and such... maybe not. Personally, as a non-piano player, I prefer
semi-weighted and use an old DX7. Anyone used to an acoustic piano will
want/demand a fully weighted keyboard. Someone who has started on a B3 for
example may not. Also many piano players feel they must have 88 keys.
Again this is a personal call. Other people who do note at a time composition
find a two octave mini-keyboard fits their style just fine, some even just
use their computer keyboard running a virtual midi keyboard in software.
In general, unweighted keyboards are not velocity sensitive, but
semi/fully weighted are. Some chart creation sw is able to change velocity
into meaningful notation.
As a bass/guitar player, I find it hard to emulate my playing on a
keyboard. For composing that may not be an issue.

I admit to being more concerned about the ability to interface and produce
what I desire musically then how it feels to play. I can say with 99.9%
firmness though that I do not want to use my computer keyboard for this
however!
I started with acoustic pianos, so yes I like weighted keys, and yes I
would love an 88 key option. I will consider smaller though if for no other
reason than the space.
I can resonate with a real base player finding it hard to play their lines
on a keyboard. still when I am composing baselines in my head, much the
way I compose other things, it is my hope that the lines will translate to
a base chart well enough. I will not know until I try if this makes sense.

Do you already have a sequencer in mind to act as a multi-track 'recorder'? If
not, maybe Midish will do the job (I've not used it myself).

As you may have figured from some of the responses, most of "use what we
brung". That is whatever is sitting around gets used. MIDI has been around
since forever and there are very few keyboards that will not work for you.
There are even a lot of toy keyboards that have MIDI out. For example, I
have a Yamaha PSS-480 with 3/4 sized keys that has MIDI in and out and
could be used for keyboard input (4 octaves and 26 inches long). It does
not have any weighting, but for note by note recording that probably does
not matter. Just look at what keyboard you like and can use/afford and
look for that 5 pin din on the back. If you are buying used, I would test
to make sure it works. New stuff can generally be returned if tested and
taken back promptly. Any store with more than one keyboard means you can
take MIDI out from one and should get sound on the other.
I don't think we can give anything more at this point. Really you will
have to look and try for yourself.

Akai MPK-88? I'm a piano player, so I like weighted keys.
I also have access to a Yahamaha S90ES 88-key weighted keyboard
synthesizer. Old, but a very nice feeling full-size piano keyboard!
