Hello,
Seeing the description in Ardour's manual for mixed MIDI/Audio tracks
and how they relate to Reaktor, which I knew nothing about, I looked
into it and found an Ubuntu page on how to run Reaktor using
basically wine and dssi-vst. So I got the sources for dssi-vst and try
to compile on a 64-bit machine. Got the Steinberg SDK, the multilib
for g++ and gcc, made a symlink for zconf.h to be found and now the
compile halts at not finding '-lz'. I tried installing libzip, then
lzip (lzma compression) but none are fulfilling the requirement.
What is this -lz exactly ? And, anyone running Reaktor in this way ?

Ok, for Arch zlib is from core, so it must not be mentioned, but at
least lib32-zlib isn't from core, so it should be mentioned, if it would
be needed.

... you'll need the zlib development packages, probably zlib-dev or
zlib-devel or something depending on your distribution.

I have read the README file, of course. The "Ubuntu page" is a general
page on how to install Reaktor. It is:

Yes, it looks like it is dependant on a specific arch version. In this
case I installed the 32 dev package and it went OK ... Until it does
not find -ljack.
Now I'm a little bit weary about making the system non functional by
installing a package that could joyfully remove others. It happened
before with the original dssi-vst who removed jamin in its
installation. That was not nice. A bit later a colleague at work
figured it out and submitted a patch. It had to do with lack of
multilib support. Nevertheless, during installation it removed jamin
just like that. Now, if I start to add 32-bit devel packages, will it
ever at one poitn decide to remove other packages ? Or are the 32-bit
packages, to the contrary of a lack of multilib support, able to
fully co-exist within the 64-bit system that is, not in theory but
according to the Debian/Ubuntu packaging people ?
I would like to slowly move towards compiling 'everything' from
upstream. In the meanwhile I have installed the dssi-vst package and
can run Reaktor.

That is the one most people have trouble with, you search for the -dev
package and get: libjack-dev. This wants to remove a pile of packages that
depend on jackd2 because the above package is for jackd1. The package to
install is: libjack-jackd2-dev
This is one place where the idea of splitting off the -dev part of a
package does not work well. Jackd and jackd2 should just depend on the
correct -dev package to begin with.

(ie. Not "Software center")

OK. libjack-jackd2-dev was already installed. So I installed
the :i386 counterpart. make clean; make and dssi/vst completed
compiling.

This is twice recently now that I'm stuck at the nice GUI. Must be old
age. Once with Calf, then with this colourful Linux Mint software
installer. In any case I know better, so I should not be distracted by
those presentations ! :)
