i've been using mixxx (http://mixxx.sourceforge.net) with no problems
for some time, but recently - *around* the time i patched my alsa driver
with emu10k1 multi-channel, and updated qjackctl to the latest - it's
being weird:
* it starts without any drama the first time in a session (by that, i
mean the first time i start up mixxx after having booted my computer),
but if i close it and try to start it again, it's ouputs show up in
qjackctl, but there is no gui ... even if i stop jackd and start again,
the same problem - outputs, but no gui ...
* if i delete the .mixxcfg in my home directory, then it starts again,
but this requires me to each time reconfigure mixxx :(
* if i reboot the computer (without deleting mixxx's config file), then
it starts properly with all configurations intact :)
if i start mixxx from the command line when it doesn't show a gui,
here's what output i get:

i haven't been able to discover any more detailed debug output ...
if it's any help, this is how i start jack (from qjackctl):
#jackd -T -R -P60 -u -dalsa -dhw:0,3 -r48000 -p256 -n2 -s -S -P -o16
any help appreciated.

Are you using version 0.09? I fixed a nasty bug in the voice allocator.
That sounds like the same symptoms.

Is there an ladspa equiv to dynasone?
or any other multi-band compressors?
(not Jamin as I want to use the ardour ladspa interface........
I Am getting my card in the mail todau and I am psyked to try out ardour
with a PRO card.....but there are a few tools that I feel I will need.....

Just out of curiosity - why do you need a multiband compressor? They're
typically frowned upon, as they can upset the tonal balance if used
improperly.

Iam remastering some old NASTY 4 track sessions....
and with much work in Nuendo I have resolved at least a FEW errors using
these tools...
( Do consider compression a "tool" and not and instrument) hehe
I hope that when I get my delta 44 in the Mail I can start using ardour to
so some of this work...
(and learn more as well)

I'm not sure, but it might be some memory issue that popped up with wine
after 2004-05 or something. Mark Knecht has posted a patch against
jack_fst on this list about a two months ago.

Do you want to use multiband compression on a single track or on the
mix? If you want to use it on the mix just run Ardour's master bus out
to JAMin and then back into a new stereo track.

Speaking of jamin and compression, what are some good books that would
teach a person what these tools are for? Preferably it would be more than
a ProTools book and more of a general recording/mixing techniques book. I
am brand new to the idea of recording so I am pretty lost when it comes to
using any of this stuff for more than the very basics. I tried using some
compression and noise gates in one of my recordings and just broke stuff.
I don't understand things like "write,play,touch" in the menus so I
can't
realy use any of it effectively.

I would recommend David Franz's book "Recording and Producing in the
Home Studio: A Complete Guide" available from Berklee Press.

This is a basic guide to producing and engineering with enough advanced
stuff to keep you interested. He covers tracking, microphones, editing
and mixing. This is definitely a generic book, so you don't need
protool$ to get through it. When I read this book, it also highlighted
how powerful my PlanetCCRMA setup is!

I see the ladspa "standard" does not deal with graphical interfaces like
the ones needed to display spectral analysis...
(kind of good to keep it standard and clean right?)

plugin
would be too hard, and the CPU use would be
terrible.
Will it do multiband as well as eq ? will it do spectral analysis ?
Not unless more hosts support some sort of LADSPA UI mechanism.
