New Debian install and usb device - Linux-audio-user

I don't know the ZEDi8, but I own an older and bigger ZED18 mixer, which also provides a 2x2 USB interface. This never gave me any problem in any OS or linux distro. It's hotpluggable/always detected by ALSA's USB Audio Driver, and registers as hw:CODEC. lsusb shows it as some sort of Texas Instrument audio interface, IIRC. The data sheet for the ZEDi8 tells that the interface is USB 2.0 compliant, so in theory it should just work without additional drivers. Hope that helps...

As I said, it works fine in UbuntuStudio. lsusb shows it as an allen&heath, etc. But, on this debian box it shows up as a ZED in Qjackctl. (lsusb show the same hex ID as on the Ubunut box, but no manufacturer string) But, selecting it a starting jack results in 2 system captures and 2 system playbacks shown in the Qjack Connections window. Shows in QjackCtl as hw:ZEDi8 It doesn't appear to have a USB device name at all. lsusb just lists it like this: Bus 003 Device 011: ID 22f0:0014 USB vendor ID 22f0 is not listed in any of the databases I searched. Yes...I have used the mixer extensively on Ubuntu Studio. The even though I've selected the zed as the device in Qjack and restarted, it does not appear the source and sink shown are the zed. Having read and gone through the steps many times over the last 10 years, I have never succeeded in creating a working linux studio PC. AVLinux, no problem, UbuntuStudio, no problem. But, start from scratch and end up with a working studio, never. I follow this page and that page until I've done so much I have no idea what's there and why it doesn't work, etc. At which point I give up and go find the install media for UBS or AVL. (And, I've been a UNIX/Linux developer and sys admin for nearly 50 years. Yes, I'm frustrated.) This time I'm really trying to figure it out, it can't be that hard... I can select the ZED, I start jack and I either get nothing or the system sound HW. And, yes, I want to have sound from the browser available, for example. So, do I need pulse? I have no idea. I always see the pulse bridge in UBS. I read one website, it says trash it. Another says use jackd, another says use jackd2. Sorry, definitely not anyone here's fault...just venting. I apologize. Do you actually want pulse for anything?
