Hey, list,
I'll just say this one last time in a separate thread and close the topic
once and for all, because it makes me feel like a complaining old man.
I know many of you use soundcloud to share and distribute your material,
and I certainly can understand why, since SC seems to offer a very
convenient platform to do so and facilitate exposure and feedback from
others. No trouble there; maybe I'll jump on board the soundcloud train
if and when I ever have any audio worth sharing.
Now, as you all know, soundcloud uses a flash-based player and does not
seem to allow direct download by default. As a result, should I wish to
sample material posted on soundcloud I need to 1) fire up GNOME, 2) fire
up Orca, 3) fire up iceweasel, 4) memorise and copy the URL, 5) plug
some headphones in my computer's on-board sound interface, because audio
doesn't play through my main JACK setup, 6) wrestle with the partially
accessible SC flash player. This is my personal experience, but I know
from previous threads that other users on this list face at least some
of the same issues. I therefore think many on this list would be more
likely to comment on shared material if direct links were provided or
if, at least, direct download were enabled on soundcloud.
Most of you have amazing material to share: please don't lock yourselves
into a platform!

Only two comments to that for now:
1. The default Soundcloud widget is HTML5 since the beginning of the year.
2. Downloading can easily be enabled for every track, but this is of
course the choice of the user. As it is his choice to use Soundcloud
which is actually a very convenient platform, but I can imagine that
there might be accessibility problems … I have no experience with
that, though. But perhaps it might help you to know that the widgets
should be HTML5 and not Flash? I don’t know …

It's worth noting that Soundcloud HTML5 player only actually uses HTML5
when the browser supports MP3, which is notably not the case in Firefox
or Chromium (though Google's official Chrome builds do include it). If
you open a Soundcloud stream on one of those browsers, it'll still use

At Bandcamp we have the same problem, and we currently solve it in the
same way -- by using HTML5 on browsers that support it, and using Flash

Firefox is not a practical solution, since Apple and MS have so far
refused to support them.
Personally, I'm really hoping the new Opus codec sees wide adoption
among browser makers. I wouldn't normally be optimistic about an open
codec gaining support from the likes of Apple or MS, but it's currently
a mandatory part of the WebRTC spec, so there's some slim hope that we
may in future be able to use one streaming format for all HTML5 browsers.

mp3-capable browsers? Just curious about the perspective of someone
working in the area. I work as a web developer but my work doesn't have

Yeah that's what I was thinking.
By the way, have you guys heard about the official.fm js implementations
of flac, mp3, aac and alac, http://labs.official.fm/codecs/ ? That looks
promising in principle, as a way to overcome the lack of browser codec
support. I tried it briefly though and their demos didn't work smoothly
at all, admittedly on a rather slow computer.

be told that it couldn't recognize any of them.

You'll be happy to know that Soundcloud is implementing a new
interface that is not flash-based (and pressing space will enable the
player once the URL is loaded). Not sure when it is going to be
available, though, I believe it's in a beta phase and some users are
already signed up for it.
Anything I release under Creative Commons I allow direct downloads for

I am also planning on putting material up on archive.org. One minor issue I
have had with soundcloud is the MP3 encoding introduces artifacts
occasionally on material that has quieter passages with instruments in the
higher register (like woodwinds). Luckily, if I upload a WAV, it will keep
that as the download file while having the lower quality MP3 for playback
on the site. archive.org will let me have multiple formats online,
including FLAC and OGG.
