Hey all, I manage Jamulus servers and facilitate it as a platform at the university I work at. Jamulus can be pretty good for low latency operation, granted you have a good audio interface. For us Linux users, we can crank Jack's Frames/Period setting down low to get more decent latency. Jamulus's latency also depends on the server, since all users connect to a server and the server sends the other's audio streams to you. If the server is close and has fast network speed, you can get lower latencies. With Jamulus, you get each individuals' channels in your own personal mixer, allowing each person to mix the way they want to hear the current ensemble. The cool part of Jamulus is you can run your own server, allowing for better privacy of your audio data. You can also record your jams and it will produce a reaper project file that you can later open and mix. I like to think of Jamulus as the instant messenger of audio. It's easy to get into a room and start jamming, but you may have to play with the settings and your hardware setups to achieve really great low latency performances. Hi group I guess the reason why the IBM solution came up in the group is that it claims to be built upon open source. Otherwise it seems very similar to https://easyvirtualchoir.com . None of these seem to be synchronous and as such are more similar to an online DAW like SoundTrap or BandLab than Jamulus which is an online low-latency open source jamming tool. I use Jamulus on a regular basis and it works really great as long as you are in the same area and everyone is wired to the internet. I play in a jazzband and even the drummer finds the latency tolerable (at least if we play below 220 bpm) My wife is a choir conductor and they rehearse with Jamulus. That does not sound like what you need for a rehearsal but rather sounds like a web-based multitracking app for creating a finished work based on sequential rather than simultaneous performances, thus lacking interactivity and making improving together a quite more arduous proposition. The accordion ensemble I am in (7 persons at 6 locations) has had weekly rehearsals for the last half year. I set up a rented server by an hosting company (so at least the server is not running on a private Internet connection) weekly. With us living in the woods and having a mixed bag of Internet connections, connection quality is a constant topic (like talking about the weather). But we make do. It helps routing in a drum computer (actually, an old-timey Solton MS40 arranger using either stock rhythms or playing drum tracks entered into LilyPond) occasionally. As opposed to full audio tracks, using this kind of MIDI technology easily allows fiddling with the tempo without affecting the pitch. The drum computer obviously does not fall in the "mutual latency stackup" trap that causes everybody to slow down because they think everybody else is dragging slightly: you get used to keeping more steady than you'd be in ensemble play. In a band, a rock-steady drummer would likely help with avoiding the slowdown trap. -- David Kastrup
