Hi all,
Well, name says it all, what do people like for an audio player?
I read this blog post and was wondering if there is something he
missed as i have somewhat similar experiences,

I've been using audacious and amarok and both seem to have there
problems. Amarok makes me think too much about searching and freaks
out parsing a lot of my collection and seem really, really stupid in a
few ways. Also i don't like it how it can't just play from the
collection, i.e when it finishes that album, just go onto the next,
etc. Audacious is ok in a no organisation at all way. I like all my
music to be easy to search and there is 200gb of it.
Aqualung seems technically just what i want, but the interface is not
my taste. I find it really ugly and a bit unfriendly.
So what are the options?

You could use "Smart Playlists > Collection > All Collection" to play the
whole collection.

well almost. the flac plugin went awol on ubuntu and i'm lazy these days so
i checked out audacious. which is also nice but has bugs. and because of the
lazy thing, i didn't report them :(
you might want to look into mpd (various front ends) or xmms2.
but i suspect that you won't find your media player nirvana.
collection databases essentially mandate that you tag all your files consistently
and if you don't, you get headache inducing results when searching.
so like you, i'm still waiting for the RightThingTM to come along.

bitrate- and audio-wise, like FM radio) form for use in noisy cars
like mine, since the Archos and most other players don't feature
built-in compression.
Every "music database" system I've seen makes most or all of this
stuff a huge pain in the ass, but using Konqueror to navigate and
xmms to play works just fine. But yes, xmms is old, like GTK1 old,
and the skins reek of Incredimail. Whatever happened to music
players that are about playing music and not maintaining a library?
Consider that in Amarok, the main window is the library view and the
actual player is a little popup thing you have to open manually. I
think that's very telling.

Why can't you use mpd for network and local stuff?
For use with mpd I use to mount a network share at say ~/music/net,

Sure, but then I'm back to having 3 separate databases (one for each
computer on which I listen to music) to keep in sync, plus the one on
the Archos. Each one would be slightly different due to the

yeah, Thunar + xmms for me. i may just be stuck in my ways though,
and no player developer can work around that.

i hear that. i'm gearing up to digitize my 1300 strong jazz LP collection
at the moment. even with 3 decks running in parallel, i'm looking at
over 300 hours of recording time to schedule. i inherited the collection but simply
don't listen to vinyl. ripping it is the only way i can do it any
kind of justice. (..and then, it was as if millions of vinyl enthusiasts
cried out in horror and were suddenly indignant..)

the main window has player controls embedded in it though no?
i've seen numerous people claim that iTunes is the best thing since
sliced beats. never used it myself. anyone else rate it?
(sorta on topic. i think it runs in wine)
i looked at slimserver some time ago too. that was interesting but, again,
i always missed the simplicity of file browser + simple media player.

Since I was used to foobar2k on windows my bottom line of features may be a bit
different. It's all about some basic playback features, like gapless playback
and replaygain, but sadly, all the linux media players manage to fail, at least
partially.
Many use the same backends, which rules out gapless playback by design, and I
think none have a sane replaygain implementation.
My favorites are mpd and aqualung, both with their own set of drawbacks.
Both support gapless playback, but can't create replaygain tags.
mpd has working replaygain playback support whereas that's not so sure with
current aqualung. Aqualung uses its own system called RVA, which misses the
point of equal perceived loudness, but it has some way to import and
use replaygain values, but in later versions seems to mess that up somehow as
well.
All the rest isn't as important to me. There should be some kind of playlist,
there should be support for a couple of formats, like vorbis, mp3, flac and
wavpack. There should be support for soundservers, like alsa and maybe jack too.
There should be some possibility to edit metadata (tags).
Maybe I get lucky and see all that in one player someday, who knows ;)
Easiest way would probably be to replace aqualungs RVA with replaygain.

From time to time I try rhythmbox as it seems to have some promising
ideas and has the backing of the GNOME project but have always run into
issues in the past. Lack of gapless playback was one of them and also
the time and resources used scanning for metadata has often been
another. Perhaps no-one tests players on a large collection.
I was a fan of xmms in the past but it does seem very dated now.
For quite a while I had settled on mpd. The metadata engine in mpd was
very much faster than earlier versions of rhythmbox and it supports
gapless playback. Recently though its CPU usage seems to have gone up
to the point I get loads of sound dropouts if the machine is doing
anything else, hence taking a second look at rhythmbox.
For me the important attributes are good sound quality (for example
poor resampling algorithms are no good), support for the formats I use
- mostly FLAC these days but also plenty of Ogg/Vorbis and a little
MP3, gapless playback, good performance and a usable GUI that
integrates well with the GNOME desktop.
Other things like metadata editing are less important. Of course I
need something to do that but I don't mind if this is a different
application and, for some changes, scripting the command line tools
work well too.

last i tried them 2 years ago they needed 200Mb to run, had abysmal

I stand corrected on this point. I checked out the rhythmbox-dev
mailing list and it turns out that although the new rhythmbox output
engine is called the crossfading backend and can do crossfading it can
also do genuine gapless playback.
To make it work in gapless mode you have to enable the crossfade
backend but set the crossfade duration to zero.
Technically it works by using a gstreamer adder in the output and, as
one track is about to finish it builds a new gstreamer decode pipeline
for the new song and pre-rolls it so it is ready to supply the PCM data
into the adder the moment the previous track ends. I have tested it
with the samples refered to in the hydrogen audio page in my original
post and it played them flawlessly.

relies on mono,
something I don't know what to think of.
AFAIK mono is an implementation of .NET which in turn relies on a
virtual machine language (like Java does). The combination of the
inefficiency of that approach with a single company (Microsoft) being
in control of the specification makes it seem like a poor choice of
technology.
Fortunately though rythmbox does not appear to be implemented in mono.

Kaffeine works for me. I hate Noatun. I find mplayer nice for command
line use. I don't care much about media player's organization abilities,
I'm find with Konqueror's file management capabilities.

So general summary of the discussion is apart from
Amarok the options
for attractive and functional audio players are minimal. I really
hoped there was an app out there that did everything i want.
audio players is probably a more crowded category than just about everything except text
editors. in the audio space im sure its even more crowded than 2-channel wave editors..
surprising you can't find something that meets your needs
maybe time to make your entry into the audio player space?
Does anyone know of an app that uses and album cover view as more
central feature? Lots of apps seem focused to non-album listening.

for attractive and functional audio players are minimal. I really
hoped there was an app out there that did everything i want.
audio players is probably a more crowded category than just about everything except text
editors. in the audio space im sure its even more crowded than 2-channel wave editors..
surprising you can't find something that meets your needs
maybe time to make your entry into the audio player space?

i spent many hours trying MPD's out and all i came up with that i liked ....
Sonata.(seems easy and quite stable.)
Emphasis (i like very much but very buggy)
alas.... My favorite which i use on my girlfriends MacBook.
Theremin.
let me know if you find somthing else that is comparable. quite honestly i
just use mplayer and ssh, can't be bothered with all the fuss these days.

Not gtk/qt but quite my favorite: ncmpc
Qmpd appears to be quite ok as well.
I tried a couple someday but honestly can't really remember how they
all compare.
