Hi all, dear LAUers.
I've been doing some testing with Musix 3 beta (based on Debian Squeeze)
installed on a UMPC like this one:

I try to use this gadget as live production environment (looper, multiFX for
guitar, drum machine...), but there are some annoying things that keep me
from having something really useful and stable.
The main handicaps are:
* touchscreen have a strange behavior:
When you touch in a place the mouse pointer doesn't go there; rather it
behaves as a regular mouse and I have to slide my finger until I get to the
place or button wanted. Another issue is that it always perform left clic
when you touch the screen, resulting in moving windows when you don't want
to.
So most of the time I have to connect a USB mouse to make some music.
* wifi and blueetoth not working:
Well, that is the some old problem: Musix is 100% free/libre so theres no
driver that works, so I don't have apt-get chances to speed my work; just
copying debs on a SD and then inserting the card on the umpc slot.
Then there are other problems: no GPS for instance, but it has to do again
with drivers. But those are the main problems I have to make Musix work
properly and enjoy a full touch and record experience. I can do some music
now but with a mouse and a keyboard.
I've been doing my homework before posting this, doing some research on the
web and trying things but no luck.
I just wanted to know if any of you have some experience with UMPCs.

We've been developing version 3 for some time now, and the reports have been
quite favorable, but we'd like to work on it some more. I myself hope to
include some basic apps I've developed, and take the opportunity to release
them on Github or similar. But as always... time is what is needed :).

Tried to attach some more information to the list about the exact hardware
on the umpc, but when I connected an old usb-wifi adapter (SMC EZ Connect) I
realized that it also doesn't work, which is odd because it have work in
almost every distro for years.
BTW, today I recalled the people at Indamixxx in this list; maybe they did
have some similar setback with their Samsung model. It's a pitty that this
one doesn't have a split mini qwerty keyboard on the sides.

Ah, thanks for the news and the link. I like Musix, even though the last
one that worked on my musicbox was a beta of Musix 2. The production
version of 2 somehow lost the ability to work with the boring old Intel
video hardware that the beta knew how to work with.
Anyway, I look forward to testing Musix 3!

Our samsung Q1 ultra works well and stable since 2.1... not much HW around
these days so we moved on to Indamixx2 which has ported nicely with RC3
thanks to Gabriel Beddingfield.

We do have customers who have hacked on their own mods of transmission 2.1
on the samsung q1 ultra and have come up with some nice results.
I have the viliv products here for years as they gave me one of each to test
on for Indamixx 2 back in 2009 but I passed until something had more CPU and
better quality build. The Viliv had the Z Atom chip and the build waas
really flimsy... certainly not DJ duty or ready for a road gig :)
If I remember correctly Free had to hack Xorg and do some cool tweaks to get
the touch running correctly and not wonky. It seems like wonky comes up a
lot in touch on the tablets but we are reporting good results on Indamixx2
albeit beta still and RC3 which I think is totally acceptable for a lil
audio droid that has a lot of features for music production.

product that Transmission 5!
Is it an iPad/Galaxy tab alike tablet? Which one is it?

I use Ubuntu Studio 10.04 and i'd like to move to Musix in the future...(to
reach my free/libre voices inside)

Thanks for your kind words, Grazie Nicola.
Musix v3 is based comes with KDE 4, we're tweaking it to match our
particular desktop. But we don't forget other lighter desktop enviroments as
in previous versions, so we have at least IceWM and Openbox (I myself am
working on it because it is perfect for save resources for live playing on
the UMPC).

I wasn't up to date with Indamixx news and... what a surprise and nice
cool product that Transmission 5!
Is it an iPad/Galaxy tab alike tablet? Which one is it?
Really appealing. I take mental note of that for anyone I can give a piece
of advice.
Is just that being in the Musix team, well, I would like to make this work
:). Anyway, this Viliv just ended up in my hands, and now that I have it for
testing I would like to make something useful of it for portable music.
We do have customers who have hacked on their own mods of transmission
2.1 on the samsung q1 ultra and have come up with some nice results.
I have the viliv products here for years as they gave me one of each to
test on for Indamixx 2 back in 2009 but I passed until something had more
CPU and better quality build. The Viliv had the Z Atom chip and the build
waas really flimsy... certainly not DJ duty or ready for a road gig :)
I didn't notice that this Viliv had a less CPU than Samsung, but I think
is robust, at least is quite heavy. Besides this hardware problems, I've
been able to use it as a looper, multiFX and recording tool at the same
time. Trying to be like a one-man-band doing drums with Hydrogen or with my
hands, bass with FX or the guitar itself, jamming along and things like
that.
If I remember correctly Free had to hack Xorg and
do some cool tweaks to
get the touch running correctly and not wonky. It seems like wonky comes up
a lot in touch on the tablets but we are reporting good results on Indamixx2
albeit beta still and RC3 which I think is totally acceptable for a lil
audio droid that has a lot of features for music production.
Would love any contact or extended information that can guide me just a
little. Been trying many things and also googling for more but no luck.

Please add XFCE and LXDE as lighter desktop environments, too. (Although
I do like OpenBox.) KDE4 can be a hefty load to have on a music distro.

particular desktop. But we don't forget other lighter desktop
enviroments as in previous versions, so we have at least IceWM and
Openbox (I myself am working on it because it is perfect for save

favourite DE and have seen it mentioned by quite a few others who use Linux for audio.

server (running Aptosid) uses XFCE. My personal laptop is still running
KDE3. I've noticed that a number of KDE4 and GNOME3 have become quite
hefty, and music distros seem to be dropping them.

And it looks to me like GNOME is trying to cater for the touch-screen side of

use with a stylus, and GoCorp's old Penpoint OS was designed from the
ground up for use with a stylus.
I've never liked the GNOME desktop and particularly its apparent
philosophy of restricting user customizability and functionality. I've
firmly convinced that the first thing the GNOME design team asks itself
at every session is, "What can we take away from users next?" Jokingly,
I expect the GNOME desktop to eventually consist of a single button
labeled "Shutdown" ...
Ever seen Ubuntu's Unity interface on a netbook? It's an interesting
compromise between the needs of a small screen and the use of a keyboard
& integrated pointing device.

prefer that way of working.
And it looks to me like GNOME is trying to cater for the touch-screen
side of things ... a phone or small tablet certainly needs an interface
that can be used efficiently without a keyboard, on a small screen and
with a finger as the only pointer. That would take a lot of customising,
and a lot of work by the user, in XFCE or any other keyboard-oriented
desktop environment. My existing musicbox (running an older versin of
ArtistX) uses LXDE.
My server
(running Aptosid) uses XFCE. My personal laptop is still running
KDE3. I've
noticed that a number of KDE4 and GNOME3 have become quite hefty, and
music
distros seem to be dropping them.
Maybe, hum, Linux is a reflect of the society we are living in : more
and more
for the eye candy, less to peoples' needs ?

that way I could move the cursor without touching buttons and moving windows
when I don't want to, and do clic on the A/B button when I need left/right
