Asking which DAWs are good, especially for mixing, audio editing and stability.
I'm not a heavy DAW user. Most of my work is electronic music live
performance with SuperCollider. Because my usage is rare, I've shied away
from Bitwig, and even Ardour. I use SuperCollider a lot, and I pay for it
by answering support questions and contributing. I don't want to pay money
for something I'll use, oh, maybe 10-15 hours in a whole year.
I've had bad experiences with qtractor crashing.
Never used the non- suite.
I installed Rosegarden at one point, but never kicked the tires for audio.
Did I miss anything?

Qtractor has got a lot of issues, but crashing shouldn't be one of
those issues. MIDI already is tricky, it requires a few nasty
workarounds, but audio recordings are quasi completely unusable, at
least regarding latency compensation.
However, if it crashes, the culprit more likely is a plugin or your
distro. Most plugin packages contain crap, nobody should use, even if
they don't cause the host to crash.

Ardour is the only for-real DAW on Linux. Or Mixbus, but that's just
Ardour with some fancy plugins bolted on.
You could replace the Protools rig in a legit studio with an Ardour system
and do actual production work.
Next best choice would be trying to get Reaper to run in Wine. I imagine
that would be infuriating.

Mixbus isn't for free as in beer [1]. Ardour MIDI works, but probably
the OP expects an intuitive work-flow. I doubt that a lot of users are
pleased with Ardour's MIDI implementation.

Reaper is neither for free, sure, under wine you could ignore this and
reset it after the testing period is over, nor is Reaper "F(L)OSS" (see
subject).

Are you suggesting a viable alternative to Ardour exists? I'd be very
interested.
I don't care about MIDI, I just need a DAW that does the sorts of things
ProTools does. Cut and paste audio, fly regions around, set up busses and
sub groups and VCA groups, apply plugins, do fader automation. An actual
DAW, not a Fruity Loops clone or something. Sounds like this is what the
OP is looking for as well.
If such a thing other than Ardour exists I've never seen it.

Did you read the OP's request? Did I suggest anything? If I could
suggest free as in beer FLOSS software that fit's the OP's needs, I
already would have done this.

Users who rarely use a DAW usually want something that could be used
more intuitive than Ardour could be used, even if the OP's "especially
for mixing, audio editing and stability" should exclude MIDI
completely, the software should be more similar too Cubasis and similar
for iOS, than Ardour.

i use ardour a lot, it's good. If you install a release, or build your
own from the stable sources, it's steady.
Most things are tunable, shortcuts, cpu-allocation, io-buffering.
For you there's an Ardour quark for sc, plugging control and feedback of
everything OSCified (= most things in ardour) into sc:
a = Ardour()
a.play
a.stop
a.add_marker
a.remove_marker
(3..7).do{|strip| a.strip_mute(strip,1)}
(3..7).do{|strip| a.strip_mute(strip,0)}
a.master_gain(-3)

If you just need to stitch some audio together every now and then and
are ok with (mostly) non-realtime effects, Audacity might be the tool
for you.
