Hi,
I dunno if ALSA modular has it's own forum?
What do some of these things in the program do? I like this program alot
so far, but I never played with a real Modular system, so I don't know
much about making cool sounds with it. I made a cool wah-wah bass sound
that I saved.
What does quantizer do? I doesn't seem to anything. I can't figure out
how to trigger it either, nothing but Quantizer makes a trigger signal
it seems. I looked at some examples but didn't figure out how it worked.
How do use CVS? What do you put them into?
Can you play it polyphonic? LADSPA says Create Poly, but I don't know
what it does.
Where can I learn to make sounds with a modular synthesizer? I can make
basic sounds so far, but how do I make interesting sounds with it? I do
it mostly by accident so far. I don't know what I'm doing so I just put
wires all over the place. Sometimes it sounds amazingly cool though!
Sometimes it makes the machine blow up (crickle-crackle).

provides an introduction. Many modules are quite similiar to real
analogue modules of the Doepfer A-100 system. The manuals of the Doepfer

The CVS module creates constant control voltages. This is sometimes useful
to control other modules.

about mono/poly LADSPA plugins. Dependend on your CPU power and the patch
size, ams can be played polyphonically. Use the --poly parameter when you
start ams.

There are several good books on that topic, but many of them
are out of
print. Therefore I hope that my ams-documentation and the examples provide
a good starting point. Perhaps we should add more sample patches on the
ams project page.

I've made all kinds of cool sounds with it I just can't figure out what

Most of proprietary synths come with tonns of sample patches etc. So
why not? :-)

Matthias has included a very cool patch for AMS called
example_ams_demo.ams (shameless plug since I wrote it :) which
demonstrates quantizer use. Load it, listen to it and muck with the
settings and you'll get a good idea of the kinds of things that you can do
with it. AMS is a very versatile and fun to play with synth program.

I think AMS is cool. I am having only one problem with it, I believe it
has something to do with my soundcard. Sometimes patches will explode
into violent noises (even the ones that are demos). I am going to play
with the --frag option and see if it is that.
I might try it with Jack, but I am afraid of powerful Demons :) I have
mangled many Linux installations by hacking around with programs I
didn't understand or messing with configurations without knowing what
they were. I use this machine as my only computer, I really don't want
to lose it all and have to reinstall everything. It took a while to get
it setup this way. I will wait until someone puts up a Jack HOW-TO that
is more extensive and explains it so that regular users can use it
without fear. Until than I just consider it experimental but I am very
interested in it and want to use it more.
The words Low-Latency and Professional Audio are very captivating.. but
I tread lightly with powerful real-time demon programs. I have learned
from experience. I would program it more.. but, the whole process puts
the willies in me... anything running as root makes me nervous. Not
that I fear Jack is defective, I fear what I am doing is defective..
so... that is why I don't mess with it too much and have a neurosis
about it. I have seen Linux die because of something stupid I did
before.
But so far ALSA is really very good and I have no problems using it at
all. I have figured out the MIDI sequencer pretty well, I am going to
make some HOW-TO's so people can program it. There isn't very much
information about ALSA Sequencer programming. I found a few small demo
programs and that was enough to dig into the API and figure it out. I
think Dr. Mattias was the author, now that I think of it. That and
reading the API headers I figured out how to program it.
I joined the AMS list so I will see you there.
