Hello list! I'm having some trouble with burning CD's and having trouble finding sources of info - I don't know if I'm just not looking very hard or well, or if I'm really getting stuck basically, right now on my system, they end up being coasters about 90% of the time - I've been trying both cdrecord and xcdroast and both either do the burn (i've tried burning iso files for backups and also doing audio cds) or they'll have some sort of error, fixate, and eject the disk early in the process I assume this is an issue with the hardware, I guess - I have an artec 52x burner other than this I don't have all that much info at my fingertips (I'm at the wrong computer) - but I'm trying to find stuff to start reading, checking, etc... any ideas would be appreciated! thanks! --------------------------------------------------------------- Houston Poetry Slam Team www.houstonpoetryslam.com NQuit Records www.nquit.com ---------------------------------------------------------------

My mistake - the second one I'm talking about here is xdm, not gdm. gdm is the display/login manager that comes with GNOME - it asks you for your username, then the password box comes up after that. Still, this bug only affects users of kdm, it seems. You're probably running kdm if you've installed a KDE desktop as the default. It still happens even if you are running a desktop other than KDE, eg Blackbox, if you've logged in via kdm. It affects machines with both standard and multimedia kernels. To recap, Austin's fix for the skipping Audacity cursor is: Adjust the -n level from -10 to 0 in the file /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers so the last line looks like this: :0 local /bin/nice -n 0 /usr/X11R6/bin/X -deferglyphs 16 If someone could add this to the Audacity FAQ, I'd appreciate it. [linux-audio-user] Terratec Phase88?

Hey all, Noticed the Phase88 in the new Musician's Friend catalog - very, very attractive price for such a loaded interface. I have two questions: 1) Is it supported under ALSA? I've done a bit of research and it's difficult to find anything on the Phase88. It looks almost exactly like the EWS88 MT, straight down to the layout of the breakout A/D conversion box. In fact, a post on RAP hints that it might just be a rebranding: http://groups.google.com/groups?q=terratec+phase+88+group:rec.audio.pro&hl=… 2) Does it sound decent? I'm currently using an M-Audio Delta44 and dying to get more channels. This is much cheaper than a Delta1010. If I had the cash now to drop on a 1010, I'd do it, since I know the M-Audio stuff rocks. [linux-audio-user] Using a Shure sm57 mic w/ low end soundcard

Hello all: I am looking for advice on using a Shure sm57 microphone directly into the mic input of a Creative sbawe64 gold soundcard. I am using an impedance matching XLR to 1/8" adapter and I have raised the "capture" level in the mixer. To record anything (say using arecord) I have to crank up the mic-in level to full and the result is that I get a lot of hiss and the signal is still pretty quiet. Do I need an external preamplifier to use the sm57? If so where can I go to find one or schematics to build one? Or is there a simpler way? Thank you for any suggestions, Paul

[linux-audio-user] Low latency kernel on Mandrake

Hi. I'm confused about whether or not I have a low-latency kernel, and if not why not. I installed the multimedia kernel and booted into it but: [root@olaf joe]# cat /proc/version Linux version 2.4.22-21mm.1mdk (dtholen(a)klama.mandrake.org) (gcc version 3.3.1 (Mandrake Linux 9.2 3.3.1-4mdk)) #1 Tue Oct 28 15:05:18 CET 2003 [root@olaf joe]# cat /proc/sys/kernel/lowlatency cat: /proc/sys/kernel/lowlatency: No such file or directory Does this definitely mean I don't have low-latency? Any ideas why not? Can't identify anything relevant in /var/log/messages. Does /proc/sys/kernel/lowlatency relate to the pre-emption patches or Andrew Morton's low-latency patches or both or what? Thanks for any help.
