Gnu/Linux has evolved so much, but it still can give you pains. My experience
has also passed through times of trouble, but recently I've been dealing with
it almost in perfection, since installing and updating the planet-ccrma
packages at http://www-ccrma.stanford.edu/planetccrma/software/
This is RedHat based, so it would force you to change distro!!!
It is apt based so most installs and update are automatic and in fact a breeze.
If you want to try it out, I think it's one of the best sites around...
Let me know if it works out!
Cheers,
Carlos
Hi all,
Announcing immediate availability of Soundmesh Internet2 audio streaming
software.
1. What is Soundmesh
Soundmesh is a result of a collaborative work with Mara Helmuth. It
originally started as an "Internet Sound Exchange" Internet2 project and
has since grown to become a full-fledged audio streaming front-end. The
sole purpose of this app is to provide a mechanism for streaming
multiple
CD-quality (or better) audio soundfiles via fast Internet2 connection,
utilizing hacked version of the RTcmix v.3.1.0. Hence, Soundmesh
provides for a unique "jamming" tool via Internet for a larger groups of
participants.
2. Obtaining Soundmesh
Soundmesh is currently only available in a source form and is
downloadable from my website. It's download is broken into 2 parts: the
soundmesh front-end (~530KB)and the hacked full version of the
RTcmix3.1.0 (8.2MB). They can be obtained using the following direct
URL's:
http://meowing.ccm.uc.edu/~ico/soundmesh/soundmesh-latest.tar.gz
(~530KB)
http://meowing.ccm.uc.edu/~ico/soundmesh/rtcmix-soundmesh.tar.gz (8.2MB)
Alternately, you can also find the download links on my website.
Documentation is also available:
http://meowing.ccm.uc.edu/~ico/soundmesh/Documentation.txt
Screenshot:
http://meowing.ccm.uc.edu/~ico/soundmesh/Screenshot.jpg
3. Current Limitations
*Soundmesh obviously does not currently support modular numbers of
incoming and outgoing streams. This is something that is planned for a
future release.
*Perl (.pl) scorefiles are supported in soundmesh but do not work in
RTcmix
*Python RTcmix scorefiles are currently not supported and do not work
with
either soundmesh or this version of RTcmix
*A number of playable streams before "gapping" occurs varies depending
on the quality of a stream and the internet connection. Considering that
this is an Internet2 project, chances are your modem connection will
simply not work [well or at all].
*Sound played via network is not heard locally (should be a quick fix).
*Connections are not secure.

I am trying to set up a sound card under RedHat9
Kudzu detected it as a Creative Vibra 16x PnP (CT4170)
So that is good but my apps (primarily XMMS) are trying to use /dev/dsp
I suppose I need to make /dev/dsp into a symlink to the new device, but
How do I find which /dev, if any, is setup as the new card?
Or is there something else I need to do?
Thanks,
Ken Goudsward
I was recording a particularly roaring jam last night and my HDD
overheated (I think).
Why does it always happen when you are doing your best work?
Anyway I have an extreemely large file which I cannot access with any of
the players I have.
Does anyone know how I can check the file to see if there is any useful
info in it and recover whatever was recorded?
I was using arecord so I assume that at least some of it was written to
disk.
I'm thinking I need to scan the file for the ggod info then cut it up
with some thing that cuts files into bits and discard the junk then put
it back together or just put the parts into seperate files.

Hi all,
This will probably be the last release for this version; there's
something Bigger And Better (TM) in the works:

Can you say "death chambers at Guantanamo with no real trial"?
Finally got latest Ardour CVS configured and compiled, thanks for the
advices to all of you. But now my problem is that when start JACK with
"jackd -d alsa" and then run Ardour as root, it gives me this message in
Ardour:
"JACK has either been shutdown or it disconnected Ardour
because Ardour was not fast enough. You should save the
session and restart both JACK and Ardour."
Console says:
"Ardour/GTK 0.374.6 running with libardour 0.681.5

and JACK gives me this message:

Ok, I got one infamous integrated soundcard by VIA, but Jack worked on
that when I got version 0.62 (now 0.72.4).
Whoa, thanks already!

Hi, is there anybody who knows about the existence of a Linux driver for
the Audiophile USB device by M-Audio? I want to buy this one since the 2
x more expensive Quattro is not affordable in my case (and neither need
that much audio in- and outputs), allthough a linux driver seems to
exist for the Quattro (written by...?). I mailed M-Audio and they simply
reply they do not support Linux for these devices. Only their Delta
cards are supported for Linux but the drivers are written by third party
developers. Maybe it is possible to modify the Quattro driver such that
it works with the Audiophile as well, but I'm not particularly a wizzkid
for these things.... Is there anybody who can help me find a solution?
thanks in advance,
greetz

Jelmer Cnossen <jelmer(a)cyozlab.com>
The other evening, when everyone was home from work, Christy asked if I knew who it was that was playing the song she liked on the radio that I had on. I told her to go to www.kfog.com and it will say what is currently playing on their web site.
This is a common thing now, to hear something, and if we find the name of the band; to then go look for mp3s on the net of other songs by the same group. If we like the music and feel like listening to it again, we always go out and buy the CDs.
We value the quality of the sound we listen to around here, and the compressed stuff on the net isn't really that good anyway. I am getting very concerned about the copy protection in CDs, where they will only play in commercial audio CD players with error correction. I feel like someone is trying to blur what I am able to see out of my windows, because they are worried that I might take a picture. My fear is that some of these CDs may be easily turned into junk by a little mishandling?
As an aside.
Most of our CD decks have digital outputs that we then connect to the amps. And most of our sound cards in our computers have digital ins. Am I missing something here?
Tracey.

Yes, ardour stops hydrogen, but does not start it, since
- ardour(0.9beta1) does not send DEFERRED PLAY
- libhydrogen does not call startPlay()
when they are supposed to do so.
But, quite easy hack to get them there. Though, I still had to adjust
the recorded track in ardour, which is definitely not what I want. But
wait....

Absolutely cool. It works like a charm. Forget about MMC, MTC.
VIVA JACK! VIVA ARDOUR! VIVA HYDROGEN! VIVA PLANETCCRMA!

I've been writing and recording music in Windows now for about a year
and a half (if you want to hear my music - some mp3's can be found at
http://www.ldscompanion.com/music/artists/PI/ )... I got completely
sick of windows, and switched to Linux, and for about 5 months now, I've
been trying to successfully get my computer to see my keyboard through a
Sound Blaster Audigy's front-panel MIDI connectors with no luck. I'm
just about to go back to windows. Please - if anyone knows where I can
find any good info, point me in the right direction. :)
OS - MDK 9.1
Software - MusE .6.0rc5
Hardware - Roland RS-9 keyboard and SB Audigy Platinum EX.
Thanks again.
