Hi All,
I've got a bunch of files in MPEG-4 format (x.m4a) - is there any
software to convert them to either mp3 or (preferably) ogg or flac
files?
Cheers
Dylan

I am not able to reconstruct the linebroken links, and I would like to see
the pictures. Do you think you could tinyurl them? (http://www.tinyurl.com)
But I do have a feeling you can do this with Pure Data, the k_jack~
external, and the plugin~ external. http://pure-data.sf.net

At the moment, there's a lack of real drum synthesizers in the Linux Audio
world.
Drum synthesis instead of sampling is important to emulate the dynamic sound
of -for example- the TR-909 hand clap, which is generated out of white noise.
You can find some patches for Alsa Modular Synth here:
https://sigterm.demon.nl/~stanley/drumsynth/
Most patches don't sound like the real 808/909, because they need some/much
more tweaking. Feel free to improve the patches.
I'm now trying to decipher the original schematics of the TR-909, my aim is to
write a separate 909 softsynth (clone), because Alsa Modular Synth is too
limiting (difficult/impossible to create drum maps, difficult to handle
multiple instances of AMS, etc)

I wasn't sure whether people knew this or not, but both Band-In-A-Box 2004
and PowerTracks Pro 9 from PG Music work under Wine (20040615, for example).
Band-In-A-Box 2004 looks and works much like under Windows. PowerTracks has
a couple of odd behaviors, but I found it interesting that they worked as
well as they do. I have not gotten the notation to work yet; I'm not that
familiar with Wine. It appears that the TTF's require a server. That
is quite an omission, but it looks interesting in comparison to Rosegarden
and Muse.
If this is old news, I apologize, but a search didn't uncover anything
recent at LAU.
Dave.
Something important I forgot to say about PG Music Band-In-A-Box:
The main menu doesn't work on my installation (but does for PowerTracks).
This isn't of as much concern as one might think, because all of the
ToolBar buttons work, so just about anything that one needs to do one
can do. (At least, this is true in my case.) Alt-F4 quits. Closing
the window also appears to work OK for quitting.
Dave.
Hi Folks...
Any other Mandrake users having trouble accessing Thac's rpms pages?
Look's like the site is down. Have not been able to access in a couple
of days. I'm beginning to suffer from withdrawls! ;/

after reading lee's email i had to try this kernel.. so i went over to www.de.kernel.org, grabbed 2.6.8-rc1 and patched it up with this patch:
http://www.ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0407.1/1453.html
On first sight it looks very good. many of the sporadic xruns i experienced with jack in RT mode are gone. even a "find /" parallel to a "make bzImage" seems not to provoke any xruns [i use ext3]. But: i use fluxbox and it supports desktop wheeling [switching desktop via scrollwheel - very handy] and doing this excessively and rapidly provokes xruns easily. Also starting mozilla just provoked an xrun..
Well to provie more detailed info i thought i'd turn on xrun tracing. So here are the steps i took:
1] enabled debugging in the alsa drivers [i did that when i built the 2.6.8rc1mm1 kernel and the included alsa modules.
2] mango:/home/tapas# echo 1 > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/xrun_debug
mango:/home/tapas# echo 1 > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0c/xrun_debug
3] started jackd -R -d alsa -p 512 and provoked xruns, but the traces are nowhere to be found.. where should i look? /var/log/messages - nothin; /var/log/debug - nothing; /var/log/dmesg - nothing.. Maybe i'm just stooopid here.. Please enlighten me.
Thanks,
Flo
