hallo,
the new version of my audio editor eisenkraut finally
seems to be linux compliant. i've tested it on fedora
with a recent supercollider build without problems.
watch out: http://sourceforge.net/projects/eisenkraut
eisenkraut is a java based audio file editor which
uses supercollider for playback.
there's also an interesting new package jcollider on
the sourceforge site which you may wish to explore if
you are into supercollider ;-)
best, -sciss-

I don't think I understand this jackplug concept.
I'm trying to get an alsa client, such as aplay to play through jackd.
I've setup jackplug in /etc/asound.conf
pcm.jackplug
{
type plug
slave
{
pcm "jack"
}
}
pcm.jack
{
type jack
playback_ports
{
0 alsa_pcm:playback_1
1 alsa_pcm:playback_2
}
capture_ports
{
0 alsa_pcm:capture_1
1 alsa_pcm:capture_2
}
}
I then tell aplay to use:
#aplay -d jackplug foobar.wav
But aplay plays the file even if jackd is not started; why?. Isn't
jackplug supposed to show up in my jack connections when aplay is
playing?
I seem to be missing something vital.
Is there some way to make a "fake audio device", like hw:3,0 that alsa
applications can connect to so that I can get the audio out and then
send it through jack, process it and then send it to the real audio
device?

Hi,
finally the Wiki went online:
http://wiki.freeaudiosoftware.orghttp://freeaudiosoftware.org currently is a simple redirect to the wiki.
About this Wiki: The idea was that we have a Wiki to collect hints, tips
and solutions we see in this list.
Why a new domain?
I often found useful hints in this list, but none of the existing wikis
seemed to be on topic, so I stored info on my private machine only.
It's a pity.
So if you get valuable info from this list or want to contribute to the
wiki in any way I'd be glad if the Wiki grew to a central place where
users of free audio software will get a good starting point to get info
about tutorials, software usage, an overview over important web pages
and so on.
I hope you like it and help making it worth the efforts.
Best regards
ce
Hi,
I would like to buy an external audio interface (mainly for a laptop,
but I may use it with my desktop machine too). My requirements are:
- must work with Linux (obviously) and MacOSX,
- at least 4 inputs, 8 would be better (for recording drums among
other things),
- at least a couple preamps would be nice, but this is not an absolute
requirement.
AFAICT, most USB interfaces have only 2 inputs. I found the Edirol
UA-101 and the Lexicon Omega Desktop Recording Studio which look like
what I want, does anyone have any experience with these two?

Hello everyone,
There was an ardour-users post about this device today:
http://www.frontierdesign.com/Products/TranzPort
which costs $199 from samash.com, and has fully published MIDI specs.
Is there a chance anyone has tried it?
I have been tossing around the idea of getting a cheapo laptop to use
as a thin client to my Ardour machine so I can easily interact with
Ardour while recording (I used to do a lot of drum recordings, and
always getting up to walk from kit to computer was annoying!)
This sucker seems like a great idea - I could ditch the thin client
and remotely control my stuff. And with the specs, it'd be easy to
make it do a host of other stuff to...

Not to disagree with anything you said, but I also want to add to the
record that theres a lot of christian black and death metal bands:
Religion =/= music style.

Hi all!
I tried searching the archive's but they dont want to play it seems.
I have a laptop with a crappy AC'97 sound chip. I almost made myself
bald trying to get software mixing to work so I can run TeamSpeak and
cedega (WoW in my case) at the same time. Finaly I managed it with a
un-holy alliance between dmix/dsnoop with TeamSpeak talking to artsd.
To me, all this is hairy in the extreme, and it munche's cpu-cycles
like a 3 year old in an candy-store. aoss & TeamSpeak simply does not
work. Not in any shape or form.
So, looking to aleviate my problems I went looking for some new
hardware that would do hardware mixing. I was seduced by the sexyness
of usb-headset's and bought myself a Plantronics GameCom Pro 1,
thinking to myself "It's got a DSP, it does hardware mixing surely?".
No, no it does not. At least not with snd-usb-audio. I dont actualy
know if it's the headset or the drivers. If you have any pointer's or
expeirences with this I would love to hear from you.
Being slightly unhappy with this (not to unhappy tough, the GameCom
is a lot easier on the ear than the builtin) I went looking again for
a solution. And I found this:
http://www.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=1&subcategory=204&pro…
and now I'm salivating again. But this time I have managed to keep my
credit-card in it's holster long enough to ask here first. Anyone have
any experience with this sort of thing? Will this do Hardware mixing?
Releasing me from my struggle's with arts dmix/dsnoop and it's ilk? Is
it, in short, the answer to my parayers?
Thanks in advance for any help/info you can provide.

Hi.
I am still writing this MIDI editing mode for Emacs. My backend is getting
quite usable, and I reached the point where it parses and writes back out
every MIDI file on my disk without loosing data. However, I'd like
to make sure that what I am working with is really robust and do yet another
round of tests. Thats the reason for this mail, if you have, or know
of any complicated MIDI files, please send me private mail
with either an attachment or a direct URL. Complicated here means
"uses many different standard MIDI features" or "Uses unusual MIDI commands"
or "Is larger than 300K" or "Is a type 2 file".

Hello administrators, hello list members,
for my research for a lecture I will be holding on opensource and audio
in October in Stuttgart the following informations would be very
interesting:
How many people are subscribed to the lau / lad -lists. How many
participate actively ? Is it possible to roughly estimate, where they
are from (Amerika, US, Asia, part of Europe, Germany).
Is anybody capable of providing those informations? Thank you very much,
Michael
Well, it wouldn't be dead, but the Rebirth people legally made the
author discontinue...
Actually IMHO it's not the worst thing to happen for the freeware
community, I sort of frown upon the practice of 'cloning' and enjoy
genuinely new free apps a lot more... ZynAddSubFX comes to mind.
