Yeah, I have experienced those crashes too. But I think it is because
it runs out of memory, which doesn't work very well with jacks
memory-locking policy. For snd, this problem is solved very easely
by just calling memunlockall, but that shouldn't be done when running the
realtime extension (and manually locking used memory is not very doable),
so its a quite unsolvable problem. (Well, you could buy more memory, or
snd+guile could be reprogrammed to use less memory, or the linux kernel
could be more gentle with its killing-policy.)
All,
Very shortly I plan on building out my new workstation, specifically for audio
and video editing and production. Might do some music, but mostly speech
content on the audio side of things. The video will be mostly video of
presentations, but may be some more intensive items. Here's the basic idea
right now:
4U Rack Mount Case - From New Egg, like $70-$80.
Intel Mobo - Not sure which one, anything with a decent amount of PCI slots
available I suppose
Intel Proc - I'm probably going to go for a Core 2 Duo I suppose. Best I can
afford.
Ram - 2GB or greater, Crucial or some such
Hard drives - SATA, atleast 3, 2 of which would be mirrored (data drive).
Looking at 250GB or greater for those.
Audio Card - M-Audio Delta 66 most likely, but possibly the 1010 if I can
swing it.
Audio Hardware - I've got an AT849 boundary mic, a few SM57's, etc., which
will be going through an ART TPS II mic pre. That should cover me on audio,
whether I'm doing speech, or mic'ing up the piano, etc.
Video Card - Having a bit of an issue here. I'm borderline zealot, and REALLY
want to stick with Intel here due to their pledge of open source drivers...
but it seems to me that noone is making an intel based standalone video card
anymore - only on the mobo.
Display - I'd like to stick to CRT for color correction issues, but I do worry
a bit about any noise because of a CRT monitor. Also, since my intent is to
go widescreen... I dunno. Maybe I should just go LCD from the start.
Video Hardware - I've got a canon elura 1-chip minidv camcorder, a sony 3 chip
with horrible audio, and access to recordings from the new canon hdv
camcorder. Plus whatever else I get my hands on through work :)
Control Surface - I'd LOVE to be able to use something like the new TASCAM
FW-1082, but I have no idea how well any control surfaces work with Linux.
Software-wise, I'm a KDE guy, but I'll probably be using Ardour, jack,
Cinellera/Kino, so on. I don't know how KDENLiVES is working nowadays, I'll
have to test it out. Probably use Kubuntu, though I might go the Gentoo
route.
So anyone have any recommendations for me? Better heat sinks to reduce fan
noise, mobo, vid card, etc? Know a control system that works nicely?
I've been through most of the FAQ's and such, just looking for input from the
general user community :)
Thanks,

Hello,
I have compiled fst 1.8 (correctly, I think), and now I'm trying to
recompile Ardour 0.99.2 with VST support. These are the errors I'm
getting:
[root@localhost ardour-0.99.2]# scons VST=1 VSTPATH=/usr/local/bin
scons: Reading SConscript files ...
Package libfst was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `libfst.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
No package 'libfst' found
...
In the documentation for fst on Joe Button's site, it says:
5) Optional: To build Ardour 0.99.x with FST support :
Copy the SC* files from the Ardour directory into your Ardour build
path, then compile Ardour with these options :
scons VST=1 VSTPATH=/path/to/compiled/fst
I have copied fst and fst.exe.so to /usr/local/bin, and as far as I
can tell, fst works perfectly by itself.
What is going on here? Should libfst have been created, or is Ardour
looking for something from an outdated version of fst?
Any help would be much appreciated!

Hi all,
I've just started playing with jack_convolve and I'm having a few
problems. If I run the program with the default gain factor (1.0) and a
room-type impulse, the output is horribly clipped - it clips on even a
small input signal. In order to get a clean output, I have to reduce the
gain to something like 0.01. Is that normal/expected behaviour? It seems
odd that the default gain would be 1.0 if a useful value is around
0.01...
For the record, I tried a bunch of different impulses from
noisevault.com, all giving the same result.
Cheers,
Stuart

This is a bit OT, but since I do all my recording on Linux machines, I thought
I'd see if anyone on the list can help...
I used to do all my recording in a basement, but since we've moved I got a new
computer setup in our finished attic. 64studio is loaded on it (and works
GREAT out of the box on my HP Athlon 64), and everything was working
tickety-boo, audio running in and out of my M-Audio 1010LT via an old, beat-up,
road-weary 16-channel mixing panel.
This basic setup (different computer and distro, same sound card, cables, mics,
etc.) was working fine at the old place in the basement. But now when I plug
my mics (ie: Shure SM58) via XLR into the panel, I hear a LOT of radio
interference. I never used to get any of this.
My first thought is that the location (way up in the air) is what is causing it.
I already tried the cheapest/quickest/easiest fix, new cables. That made no
change.
I will try plugging the unit into another outlet and see if that helps. I have
the following questions for the more experienced readers on the list:
1) Could it be my beat-up old board? Does a newer, better board (ie: modern
Mackie, etc.) have fewer problems with RF? (I know it would be quieter!)
2) I'm afraid that the RF might be coming through the power lines. Any tips on
eliminating this?
3) Is the location of my equipment (3rd storey attic) an issue? Any way around
this without shielding the entire roof? :-P
Thanks for any help! Jay
Many contributors to this list have been involved with the linux-based
Lionstracs products, and recently I was very fortunate to find one in the US
through ebay.
My thoughts? WOW and WOW.
These machines are killer! I you're new to the list and don't already know
about them, check 'em out: http://www.lionstracs.com/store/
Amazing.
Vmwaredspjack
=============
This is the vmwaredsp program, made by Petr Vandrovec, which makes vmware
work with esd or arts. This version adds jack support as well.
(Unfortunately, jacklaunch (which is a similar program) doesn't work with
vmware, but I think Gunter is working on it... :-) .)
The program isn't always working that well, but if used with care
(don't trust the output too much) and proper tuning, you can use
professional windows audio software in vmware using jack for audio
communication.

Snd-ls v0.9.7.6
===============
Snd-ls is a distribution of Bill Schottstaedt's sound editor SND.
Its target is people that don't know scheme very well, and don't want
to spend too much time configuring Snd. It can also serve
as a quick introduction to Snd and how it can be set up.
Changes 0.9.7.1 -> 0.9.7.6:
---------------------------
-Proper debug output in case startup fails.
-Fixed bug in jack audio.
-Temporary remove the fft menu because its not working with the 26.9.2006
version of Snd. Bug found by Dragan Noveski.
-Check for the existence of the sndfile.h header file before compiling.
If it doesn't exist, snd-ls will refuse to run. Problem reported by
Krzusztof Gawlas.
-Make sure snd starts up even if no file was loaded during startup. Bug
found by Dragan Noveski.
-Really apply the workaround for the menu problem.

Jack_capture V0.3.8
===================
jack_capture is a small program to capture whatever
sound is going out to your speakers into a file.
This is the program I always wanted to have for jack, but no
one made. So here it is.
Changes 0.3.7 -> 0.3.8:
-----------------------
*Added the --recording-time option to stop recording after a certain
number of seconds.
*Quitting with CTRL-C/SIGINT writes remaining buffer to disk before
ending program.

Hi,
I've been using a shell scipt to load the various applications used for my
projects and one of these applications is qsynth. As far as I can see,
qsynth does not alow a configuration file to be specified, so I can't vary
the sound fonts I use from project to project - please correct me if I am
wrong, it will solve my problem. I turned to lash / fluidsynth combination
but one of the fonts I use as multiple outputs (one for each drum). This
worked OK in qsynth, I set each channel to the same prog / channel and the
different drums would pop out of each channel as dictated by my qmidiroute
config. I've been trying to do the same with fluidsynth but everythings
coming out of the first channel.
I use
fluidsynth -a jack -C no -g 1 -o audio.output-channels=2 -o
synth.audio-channels=13 -o synth.audio-groups=13 -o audio.jack.id=test -o
audio.jack.multi=yes -R no -o audio.periods=2 -o audio.period-size=128 -o
synth.verbose=yes -r 48000
/mnt/audioHD/SoundFonts/percussion/ns_kit7freesf2lite/ns_kit7free\ lite.sf2
to start the synth then select to set each midi channel to font 0.
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers, Bruce.
I'm on the hunt for a decent digital DJ controller that works with linux. The
hercules is just a toy, I want something more robust and tactile. The
Behringer BCD2000 *looks* good, but I haven't had a chance to play with it
yet or found anything about linux support. The Kontrol:DJ has linux support
but I know nothing about the company or the products reliability. So does
anyone have some experiences or recommendations for a good one?
