Snd-ls v0.9.7.7
===============
Snd-ls is a distribution of Bill Schottstaedt's sound editor SND.
Its target is people that don't know scheme very well, and don't want
to spend too much time configuring Snd. It can also serve
as a quick introduction to Snd and how it can be set up.
Changes 0.9.7.7 -> 0.9.7.12:
----------------------------
-Fixed listener.
-Removed various debug printing.
-added --without-builtin-gtkrc configuration option.
-Downgraded Snd from 8.4/26.9 back to 8.4/12.9 again. That upgrade was a
mindless mistake.
-Copied all files from my private snd three into snd-ls. Hopefully, this
should make everything work again.
-Added fix to make jackdmp work with standard installation of guile.
-Don't quit snd-ls in case file can't be opened during startup. Bug
reported by Dragan Noveski.
-Disable FAM for now, because it fails for no reason during startup.
Problem reported by Dragan Noveski.

jack_capture v0.3.9
===================
jack_capture is a program for recording soundfiles with jack. Its default
operation is to capture whatever sound is going out to your speakers into
a file. This is the program I always wanted to have for jack, but no
one made. So here it is.
Changes 0.3.8 -> 0.3.9:
-----------------------
*Changed the -rt option name to -d, to be compatible with jackrec.
*Do not stop recording in case of disk errors.
*Replaced deprecated libsndfile functions.
*Added the --format/-f option. ("jack_capture -f flac", nice :-) )
(adding "-f w64" solves the 4GB limitation of wav files)
Hi,
I plan to make live music with a computer. My problem is I want to
control the PC with the PC keyboard. Freewheeling permits to control
with the PC keyboard.
My keyboard have some annoying limitations for example I can press at
the same time the letters 'azer', 'qsdf', 'uiop' but I am unable to
press 'rtyu' at the same time, nothing is printed. I guess it is due to
some limitations in its design. I'm afraid it's a hardware issue and I
won't find an easy workaround. I'm also afraid that this special use of
a keyboard is not the mind of manufacturers...
So what solutions do I have?
- keyboard macros : good idea but I will have to predefine everything
and I consider it as a limitation for improvisation.
- use only keys that works together, same here
- find a keyboard that works well : good idea, how to find it, how can I
explain to a pc resellers my needs...
- use midi controllers : the best professional solution, but it's to
much expensive... and I like the idea to make music with minimal
requirements.
So do you thing there is some good designed keyboard to perform this
kind of stuff?
Can some of you test their keyboard by opening a xterm and press at the
same time 'rtyu' and see if all letters are printed and whenever they
press more than one letter key all are printed in the term?
Maybe gamers should be more aware of this kind of problem :)
Thank you.
David.
Well, I just knew I would still be dissatisfied with this, so I've
tried again.
One day I'll get it right - but probably only for one day :(
Actually I've changed the voices quite a bit this time, and sort of
rediscovered harmonies that had got lost.
Here is the (n)th version.
(I don't know. I've lost count)

Hello!
I am not a big friend of sampling as I am used to the sounds of real
instruments. But I decided to give qsampler/linuxsampler (CVS version
from Gentoo pro-audio overlay) a try. And as expected my virtual
symphonic orchestra sounds disgusting.
It seems to me that this is not a problem of the sampling quality. I use
some mid-price samples in Gigasampler format. The real problem is the
"statics" of the sound. Every tone sounds the same. This is extremely
annoying on woodwinds and brasses.
Now my question: Are there any dynamic MIDI parameters
linuxsampler/libgig is able to react to? I've noticed that the engine
interprets the pitch data. Are there any other parameters (like
aftertouch, sustain, breath ctrl etc.) the engine responds to? Or are
there other concepts for making the music more sound like real music?

Latest preempt patch available on Ingo Molnar's site is
patch-2.6.18-rt7. However kernel up to 2.6.19-rc4 is available. Does
this mean that preempt patches merged into the kernel in 2.6.19, or
does this mean that I must stick to 2.6.18 if I want preemption?

Hi!
One of the leftovers of the time when I emulated punk-rock
is this piece that never went beyond being basicaly just a
MIDI-file.
Now I would love to see life breathed into it and so this
is a call to the instrumentalists, but especialy guitarists
out there ... I hope someone likes it enough to record
a track or 2 for me :)
A rough-cut demo produced with bloody GM sounds and
bad timing thanks to any combination of MusE, Cabling
and my synthesizer keyboard:

It's not set in stone, we can talk about all kinds of
changes and improvisation :)

Hello!
I've already posted this topic to the official Gentoo forums, but nobody
was able to help me.
I've successfully run my Maya 44 USB together with the snd-usb-audio
module for more than a year. But after the last update of ALSA some
strange things are going on. "Alsaconf" doesn't find the USB soundcard
although snd-usb-audio is loaded. mpg123 gives the following error:
=== Could not load default driver and no driver specified in config
file. Exiting.
jackd prints the following errors:
Code:
JACK compiled with System V SHM support.
loading driver ..
apparent rate = 48000
creating alsa driver ... hw:0|hw:0|1024|2|48000|0|0|hwmon|hwmeter|-|32bit
control device hw:0
ALSA: Cannot open PCM device alsa_pcm for playback. Falling back to
capture-only mode
cannot load driver module alsa
Mplayer is able to play media through SDL (I've no idea what this
means), but complains about missing ALSA:
[AO OSS] audio_setup: Kann Audiogerät /dev/dsp nicht öffnen: No such
file or directory
alsa-init: using device default
alsa-init: playback open error: No such file or directory
[AO ESD] esd_open_sound fehlgeschlagen: Connection refused

AO: [sdl] 44100Hz 2ch s16le (2 bytes per sample)

That means that ALSA is obviously not usable. Some more infos:

hello,
i have been off the list for a while. i need a rather _urgent_ advice
on the buying of a PC for combined Linux / WinXP audio. as a personal
Mac user, i'm rather bad concerning the different CPUs, mother
boards, firmwares etc.
the budget is 3000 EUR, which must cover the whole computer including
soundcard (= HDSP 9652 which is 500 EUR here). monitors we have
already. the setup suggested to me is intel core 2 duo (which one?
also i don't know if there are 64bit problems with windows or
linux?), like 2.33 GHz or better, and ubuntu distribution, PCI
architecture (to my knowledge RME hasn't released any PCIe versions
of its cards), matrox graphicscard. the machine is standing in a
separate room, so space / housing / noise is a rather low priority.
the graphicscard must be able to feed two TFT monitors analogue (but
digital-option would be cool), so the suggestion is matrox millenium
p650 (costs 220 EUR approx. however 64 MB RAM doesn't sound extremely
fancy nowadays??). it should have a couple of USB2 and a firewire
connector.
for people reading in germany, if you have any recommendation of
companies selling those boxes (preferably "all in one") with linux
compatibility in mind, i'm thankfull for receiving hints offlist.
is there anything that certainly won't work?
thanks, -sciss-

Old disussion. Check out the archives. Personally, I don't quite
understand why the two programs are even being compared. But a short
version is that Timemachine is steve harris' emulation of a
special minidisk player he has in a studio, while jack_capture is a
general recording tool.
Hi
I'm wondering *exactly* "unlock memory" and "soft mode" (as they appear
in qjackctl) do? Moreover:
1) Are they advised to be selected or not?
2) Under what circumstances would a check in either be beneficial and
when not?
