I would lean towards FLAC files for performance on large PA systems, though I don't know the CPU benchmarks for decoding FLAC versus extremely high bitrate mp3. I have a feeling decoding vorbis needs more CPU than either.

How do you feel about QAmix? It controls the sound card's hardware, therefore you get all the advantages of ALSA's hardware support. With a Delta 1010LT this gives lots of options. Obviously MIDI control on a software mixer like jackEQ would have even more possibilities but I wouldn't want to ignore the option of hardware mixer control via MIDI.

Dear fellow musicians,
I'm trying to get my studio up and running with Rosegarden, but I can't get an
audio or MIDI signal in Rosegarden.
My distro is Fedora 3 with the Planet CCRMA kernel, and the latest versions
of JACK and Rosegarden.
I'm using a TASCAM US-122 Audio/MIDI-USB convertor.
I've seen some earlier messages in this list about Rosegarden not showing up
in the "Readable Clients / Output ports" tab in QJackCtl; that's the same
with me, but not of the suggestions so far helped me.
The TASCAM_X2Y shows up as readable and as writable client in MIDI, together
with MIDI Through-0. Rosegarden only as Writable.
In the audio tab, I've got alsa_pcm and rosegarden at both sides, but the only
way I can get audio signal is by connecting the Tascam's Line-Out to my
soundcard's line-in :-(
TASCAM also looks okay in the USB device listing:
[root@femoralis ~]# lsusb

I should probably mention I have one of these:

I'm thinking there is room for hardware mixer control outside of the current trend of proprietary hardware for each software application.

Hey all,
Does anybody have experience upgrading from CCRMA FC3 to FC4? I've
seen that all you have to do is change any instance of fc3 in the repo
path to fc4, but the problem is it's a client's computer, and I'd
rather not crash the heck out of it.
What he really needs is Lilypond, with Rosegarden a close second. What
is the best way to go about installing everything? Should I not be in
X? Or should I just open the default X session with no WM, and
reinstall everything from Synaptic?
Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks!

Hi,
I was wondering what are you people using as a sampler in Linux. It is a
little bit sad that two of the very promising projects are stopped:
Specimen and Chionic ( http://www.reduz.com.ar/chionic/ ). LinuxSampler
is an excellent project but it seems that, for now, you are limited to
using giga sampler format and what I'm looking for is a sampler were you
can create your own patches from audio files and map them to a keyboard.
AFAIK there are no ways in Linux for making giga sampler banks. I was
checking LMMS and the sampler seems to be very limited as it doesn't
allow you to map samples to keyboard regions... Is there any solution
(beside Csound and PD) for creating your own sample patches with
amplitude envelopes and keyboard mapping?
Thanks!
Hector.
Hi gang, new to the list, please be gentle :)
I just installed DeMuDi, and to be honest, I'm a bit of a n00b so far
as music goes, other than being able to play bass and guitar (which,
in my opinion, don't expose the player to much of the musical world so
long as they can read guitar tab).
So anyway, I've been messing around with SpiralSynthModular a bit,
since I didn't like the constriction of sample-based synths, and I'm
basically having trouble stringing together a chain. Indeed, I feel
that I'm falling at the first stumbling block. I can get output from
SSM, but it's only a very loud, constant tone. I've got my midi input
hooked up to an oscillator (I think this is where my problem is) and
then my oscillator hooked up to my jack output.
I'm guessing that my problem is that I'm pumping midi data into
something designed for... something else? I dunno.
If someone could tell me which pieces do what, or point me in the
right direction, it'd be a great help :)
Sorry if this gets asked a lot or if I've missed something blindingly
obvious (like a manual ;) ).

I think we should ban all discussions concerning putting bananas,

Hi,
This is NOT Linux AT ALL, but is possibly of interest to anyone who
likes new CDs...
I ran into this one on CNBC, the business cable channel. It's a CD
trading system like PeerFlix is for DVDs. They have a pretty simple
system for adding CDs.

I presume this is only for using in the U.S. based on their postage choices.
I am not recommending this although I did sign up for a beta test
account and am starting to enter my collection.
Cheers,
Mark
List,
Someone on this list was bemoaning the lack of short rackmount PC
cases suitable for racking in an audio rack. This email has two
purposes: first, to introduce a new project that I'm going to start
working on. I call it the Ubuntu vst Server Project, a.k.a. the
poorman's Receptor. Second, the very first item on the shopping list
is a very short 2U rackmount case that would be perfect for the list
member that was asking about it.
Please read the page and let me know what you think, I'm interested to
hear everyone's opinion.

hi!
I bought a MAYA 44 Audiotrak USB soundcard and now I'm trying to set it up.

I use qjackctl and when I set it to use hw:1 as the audio interface and I get
this:

and jack won't start. What else do I have to configure for the second
soundcard. When I start an audio player, like xmms and tell it to use

I suppose the driver is loaded fine but I misconfigured something.
Please help,
