I'm having problems with realtime in JACK in my newly installed Ubuntu 7.10.
If I start qjackctl as a normal user - even the user with "admin" privileges -
I cannot start the jack server in realtime mode. The error is:
cannot use real-time scheduling (FIFO at priority 10) [for thread -1210406208,
from thread -1210406208] (1: Operation not permitted)
But if I start qjackctl with sudo, realtime works fine.
I remember from my previous Gentoo system that I had to install modules
realtime and realtime-lsm, and the user had to be a member of group realtime.
But none of that seems to apply to Ubuntu, because it uses a specially
patched kernel; am I correct about that?
Output of uname -a is:
Linux peter-desktop 2.6.22-14-rt #1 SMP PREEMPT RT Mon Oct 15 01:05:51 GMT
2007 i686 GNU/Linux
The jackd command generated by qjackctl is:
/usr/bin/jackd -R -dalsa -r44100 -p1024 -n4 -D -Chw:0,0 -Phw:0,0 -s -S -i2 -o2
So my question is: how can I run jack as a normal user in Ubuntu?

Hi everyone - thanks for being there. From what I've read, this seems like a very knowledgeable thread, so I hope someone can help with this...
I upgraded from ubuntu studio Feisty to studio Gutsy recently, and although everything sound-wise is working fine (i.e. all system sounds and non-jack dependent audio programs are working fine), I can't get jack to work with my sound card.
The sound card is an EMI 2| 6 (usb) - alsa picks it up, and I can select 'alsa' as my system sound device with no problems.
starting jackd -d alsa gives this:
loading driver ..
apparent rate = 48000
creating alsa driver ... hw:0,0|hw:0,0|1024|16|48000|0|0|nomon|swmeter|-|32bit

01:44:32.901 Post-shutdown script terminated with exit status=256.
01:44:34.688 Could not connect to JACK server as client. Please check the messages window for more info.
The accompanying /var/log/syslog records this:
Dec 2 01:44:32 ubuntu kernel: [ 7766.542118] cannot submit datapipe for urb 0, error -28: not enough bandwidth
I have read around the place that kernels up to 2.6.20 had usb bandwidth allocation which might have caused this, but I'm using what ubuntu calls 2.6.22-14-rt. So I shouldn't be getting bandwidth errors. Especially when the previous kernel worked fine with the same physical configuration of usb socket + sound card.
Plus, audacity seems to be able to achieve simultaneous stereo playback and capture. So it can't be beyond the capacity of the alsa driver...
Any ideas? I'm not averse to the idea of compiling a new kernel, but I'd want to be sure that is where the problem is before getting into it....
All the best,
Howard

Folks,
I came across today a VMWare virtual appliance that consists of 64
Studio. It was tested on Windows XP. I was surprised that studio
software/hardware activity could be contained successfully inside a
virtual machine. The test machine had 2GB of RAM. So if you know
people with Windows and want to introduce a Linux audio suite for them,
this virtual appliance could be a good way. All they need is VM Player
or VM Server (both free) and the virtual appliance. I for one would be
curious to see how the vm maps to a 1010LT audio card.

Cheers.
I decided to mess about with gneutronica.
It looks like a project from 2005, latest update is 2006.
The docs make very brief mention of JACK support, but the code doesn't have the word "jack" anywhere in it, and of course the makefile does NOT link the program with libjack, so, no jack support.
Did anyone ever add that? Is gneutronica a dead project?

Howdy-
I know at one point there was talk of FreeBob supporting the Metric Halo
interfaces as they were willing to give all necessary documentation on
them. Well I have come to a point where I need to replace my laptop
interface that has died and would like to stick with one that is Linux
compatible, and Metric Halo was strongly recommended by a friend that is on
the Mac, so I was wondering if there was any update to the status of the
Metric Halo support on Linux? Anyone know?
Short of that I would go with RME and either a multiface or digiface, not
sure which, but would rather go with Metric Halo if they are supported.
Primarily my laptop runs the Mac OS so I can get by without support for a
little while, but I am looking to put Linux back on it when it is not in
show mode.

Hello,
I have some videos which need background sounds and something like this.
Also I am working on a game which need sound too...
I was already on <www.archive.org> and was "surfing" the servers
<audio*.archive.org> for free stuff. But unfortunatly found nothing.
My requiremenst are, that the Sounds/Music must be entirely free to
fit the DFSG (Debian Free Software Guidelines).
Can anyone telle me, where I can get such sounds (of any kind).
Q: "Lunar Shuttle Disaster" WHO has written this pieces?
Maybe the name of this guy is "Devaris" or something like this
(can not remember sinde I have had no backup as the Drive crashed)
and there is a realy great sound.
Thanks, Greetings and nice Day

Hello,
Many folks from the computer-audio-scene say, that they cannot find an
application for Linux to act as a virtual guitar-amp. Of course we know,
that one can build such a beast easily from modules but ti ease the
effort for all thos, that simply want to plug and play, I made up a
patch for alsa modular synth called ams-guitrack, get it here:
http://gnupc.de/~zettberlin/law/patches/ams/ams-guitrack_RC1.ams
1.) start jackd with qjackctl
2.) start ams
3.) load the patch ams-guitrack_RC1.ams and open View/Parameter View
4.) connect alsa_pcm_in with ams_in and ams_out with alsa_pcm_out
5.) connect your guitar and adjust the gain-settings in the parameter-view
for me this gives the results I would expect from a middle-class-
Marshall-Stack with a 19"-MultiFX involved.
The patch is being used in my recent recording-experiment:
http://gnupc.de/~zettberlin/law/lapoc/ (in German)
gnupc.de/~zettberlin/law/lapoc/lac2008-noack-lapoc.pdf (paper for LAC
2008 in English)
The guitarists in the project(so-called "musicians" - not the faintest
knowledge in computers, let alone Linux....) like the patch a lot,
especially because you get exactly what you hear as you play on the
track in Ardour. And because the patch reacts to some extent like a real
amp... If everything is set just right, you can control distortion by
turning the volume-knob on the guitar ;-)
A short, not-so-perfectly well played, unpolished and thus by far not
recommendable but still cc/share-alike/attribution-licenced demo can be
found here:
http://gnupc.de/~zettberlin/law/lapoc/demos/caps-walzersturm02-0312-2007.ogg
If unbearable hiss/noise spoils the party try to fiddle with the
gain/threshold/ratio-faders of the compressor-section in tab CAPS-AMP of
the Parameter-View.
You can also store your own presets here - since I strongly abhor from
such vices as factory-presets, I got only 2 very basic ones in the patch
itself...
Of course the patch depends on other software, first on ams and on the
LADSPA-Modules from the CAPS-Collection - thanks a lot to all its devs!!!
enjoy, and as always: any comments are welcome :-)

I've got a system I'm doing tech support on, and I'm trying to get all
audio streams normalized/compressed before the audio is spit out the
speakers.
Basically, we've got several buttons that play an audio stream through
mpg123. The streams are different volumes and that understandably
upsets the customers when they change audio streams and it's suddenly
blaring christian contemporary music at their patrons.
Does anyone know of any way to do this, or at least any little
compression/normalization apps I might be able to pipe the data
through? I would prefer to avoid JACK, but that's only because I don't
want to have to do more work than necessary, and this isn't (rather,
shouldn't be) a very complex system.
Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

PS: This godawful thing is running on FC4 (vanilla, for all intents
and purposes), btw.

I'm tearing my hair out trying to get muse to listen to my midi
controller. It plays midi alright because when I enter notes in the
piano roll I hear them, but nothing from the keyboard. I'm connecting
my audigy2 port #0 (the one that works with other applications) to
muse's port #0. I've twiddled with everything I can think of.
I'm tearing my hair out because I desperately want to have a sequencer
that actually works; rosegarden crashes every 20 minutes and I haven't
yet been able to get anything working respectably in wine. So any help
would be deeply appreciated!

Hi all,
I would like to know some things that I never understood. And I would like
to know exactly what are they.
In qjackctl Settings, there are these parameters :
* No Memory Lock
* Unlock Memory
* Soft Mode
* Monitor
* H/W Monitor
* H/W Meter
* Timeout
* Start Delay
Is there a very kind person here that could explain me in simple words (I am
french) what are these settings for, and how can I set them in the best way
?
:) :) :)
I think that Memory lock refers to some libraries like GTK+, QT, wine, etc.
But it is too theorical for me.
I Know that Timeout refers to the clilents connexion, but I can't see
exactly what does it meens.
Thank you very much to enlighten me :)
Cheers,
