Hello all,
I'm setting up a hi-end stereo system fed from flacs on a linux based PC.
I want to be able to experiment with upsampling algorithms on the hard
drive
and then feed the digital data stream to a Lavry DA10 at 24/96. I'm
currently
running an M-Audio 2496 at 16/44.1 but am having bad problems with
hesitations
and popping and crackling (worst when running a DVB TV card at the same
time
(obviously)). The problems will get worse as I raise the bit rate.
I'm looking for a route forward so has anyone got better suggestions than
the
following:
1) Get a Squeezebox - this will buffer the sound, play at 24/96 but lose PC
audio e.g. the TV audio.
2) Get a better soundcard - I've read that the M-Audio 2496 is prone to the
problem I'm having, but which one? RMEs are 200-300 UKP. Are any other
alsa based cards suitable to deliver SPDIF/AESEBU at the higher bit rates?
3) Retune the PC, an Athlon 2700, by patching linux (Suse 10.1). I'm not
current
running jackd just alsa and flac123. Which patches are best applied to
the 2.6
kernel? The FAQs seem a bit out of date being dated 2000-2002.
Advice much appreciated
Bill

hello Dmitry
looking for a bus for berlin/cologne did not give me any result.
There is a bus once daily to Duesseldorf near cologne (http://www.berlinlinienbus.de/) ((no English version yet, its germany2007!!^_°)) 74 eu for a return ticket. A pdf timetable is here: http://www.berlinlinienbus.de/pdfs/dus.pdf
payment with credit card, you should book several days (at least five) in advance as seats sometimes become rare.
>From Duesseldorf to Köln there are regional trains ("S-Bahn" or "Regionalexpress") for 9.30 eu (Preisstufe 5ü) one way, about one hour. url: http://www.vrsinfo.de/eng/index.php - by tickets at the station.
BUT: at least a 10 h trip, i cannot recommend it.
http://www.mitfahrgelegenheit.de (pre-arranged lifts in private cars) is used a lot and usually works well.
people charge ~25-30 eur for the trip. Unfortunately everything there is german, you get email and/ore phone number for making an arrangement. I offer help in searching/translating/making phone calls to german numbers.
do svedanja,
david

I see: Fare (Outward and return journey) (for two persons)
Normal fare 367,00 EUR
Savings fares from 209,50 EUR
How will I get a savings fare?

If I order them from Russia by mail, there is a 99.999% probability I
will never see them :)
Can I just order the tickets in Berlin, 5 days before the trip, for
example and still get the discount?
Sorry for stupid questions, but this ticket system is not that easy to
understand.
Dmitry.
Please forgive me but I've got say: Don't tell me my sys is old
and OS version is ancient. It worked a few days ago to my
satisfaction. I'm sick of hearing it.
I'm running planet-ccrma rh9 on my machine Songbird for a long time
now. I know it's old. Dave P. put together for me several years
ago. And it's met my needs. I've tried (without success) to replace
it with a new machine; never got sound to work, power supply fan
sounds like a jet plane taking off; it'll work "some day".
But Songbird kept working; reliable in spades.
Last week, the mouse (acting odd for a long time) got too bad to
use. So I take my friends advice and go to a usb mouse. Halt the
machine; pull the ps2 mouse and plug in the use mouse.
Boot; all seems to work well; all works except SOUND! Except my
old standby, Realplayer. Alsaplayer doesn't play. Soundfont loads
for my SBlive, alsa patch bay appears to work, QA mix looks as
usual, ....
We had no keyboard for our session tonight.
With RH9, I think I know, Reaplayer forces use of OSS emulation from
ALSA. It works; I'm sitting here listening to CJRT via Realplayer
now. My keyboard is dead.
USB is stepping on ALSA. I've searched, looked at all the logs I can
find and damned it I have any idea what's happened or how to fix it if
it's fixable. I'm searching for a working ps2 mouse too.
I love linux, and computers, but they sure make saxophones seem simple.

Where could I find livecoding concerts and/or DJ sets here in San Francisco?
I checked dorkbot.org and they don't seeem to have anything of that nature scheduled.
Is that the right place to look?
We're in close proximity here to CCRMA, Silicon Valley, Berkeley, Apple, and jwz's DNA Lounge... I'm amazed there aren't livecoding events every night here, but apparently not.

two questions.
are there any good programs out there that people use for browsing
samples. i came across one call quickwav is handy but a bit limited.
also.
why is it that some applications use file browsers the order the files
Alphabetically and others browse with all files uppercase
alphabetically and then all lowercase alphabetically.
in a saturated world of data and files i'm trying to find a quick way
through it all.
bit of a strange question but would be interesting to hear what
developers perfer and why.
thanks
Instead of MP3??
Sorry for all for all the questions lately. I'm a total newbie to
Linux audio in case no one has noticed :)
Thank you for all of your help!

Hi all,
I just bought a RME HDSP 9632 today but I cannot make it work.
Yes, another guy with this same eternal problem...
I already know that this card is (should be?) well supported under
GNU/Linux (and in fact it is why I bought it)...
My system/conf is:
-----
* Distro: Debian/Sid
* Kernel: vanilla 2.6.20.2 (+ realtime-lsm) with the following specific
ALSA modules:
RME Hammerfall DSP Audio
RME Digi96, 96/8, 96/8 PRO
RME Digi9652 (Hammerfall)
What is the module I must use for a 9632?
$ lsmod | grep hdsp
snd_hdsp 43812 0
snd_rawmidi 18848 3 snd_seq_virmidi,snd_hdsp,snd_seq_midi
snd_pcm 59908 3 snd_rme96,snd_hdsp,snd_pcm_oss
snd_page_alloc 8328 2 snd_hdsp,snd_pcm
snd_hwdep 7428 1 snd_hdsp
snd 41828 12
snd_seq_virmidi,snd_rme96,snd_hdsp,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_device,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_hwdep
$ lsmod | grep rme
snd_rme96 20516 0
snd_pcm 59908 3 snd_rme96,snd_hdsp,snd_pcm_oss
snd 41828 12
snd_seq_virmidi,snd_rme96,snd_hdsp,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_device,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_hwdep
-----
I even try to use "hdsploader", but as far as I understand how it works,
it is not required for the 9632:
-----
$ hdsploader
hdsploader - firmware loader for RME Hammerfall DSP cards
Looking for HDSP + Multiface or Digiface cards :
Card 0 : RME Hammerfall HDSP 9632 at 0xdcdd0000, irq 16
-----
Do you need more informations/screenshots about my system/conf?
I have installed "alsa-tools" and "alsa-tools-gui" for "hdspmixer" and
"hdspconf".
"alsamixer" give me very poor information (but I have unmutted all I
could unmutted with it).
I have tried to use a ".asoundrc" file, but with no success.
-> Notice that before RME I used to work with a Audigy2 and all was ok.
But now the only little "sound" I can have is with jack (and only on
playback_9 port, in the headphone left part).
Any idea?
Thanks for your help...
Bye
